does somebody goes to London by car

Hi all,
I am wondering if it is a common practice to travel to the UK by car from Switzerland,
probably I will need to go to the UK in September and would like to find somebody who go there by car, since I want to take bike with me and I hope it will be cheaper than buying a plane ticket (especially if I decide to go to the UK in couple of days when tickets are quite expensive).

Yes it is common practice to drive to the UK. I have english neighbours with children who do the drive a few times a year.

You have the tunnel or ferry options.

Re: does somebody goes to London by car

It depends. Sometimes we go by train (TGV to Paris then EuroStar to London) - if we book early and travel mid-week it is excellent value and very enjoyable. Sometimes we fly with EasyJet, and often we go by car- so we can travel all over visiting family and friends and don't have to hire a car + have the car serviced in the UK.

Will be going over by car late September - where will you be headed?

Re: does somebody goes to London by car

I am planning to take the car to the East Midlands over Christmas. My wife is not a massive supporter as we have two small children, but whilst it is a full day of driving, it provides us a car when we get there and an opportunity to bring additional items back.
I see it as a mini adventure, but I will definately need the iPad to keep the kids entertained on the way !
I might repost in January with how it went and if I am still married !!

Re: does somebody goes to London by car

We are planning to drive across for Christmas too. We are going to catching the overnight ferry (P&O Ferry) from Rotterdam to Hull as my family is in the NW England. We have done a number of different ways of driving to England in the last 12 months. But my preferred is the overnight ferry as we get to have dinner and a good night sleep as part of the adventure. My girls are 8yrs and 7yrs and they just love it! Plus for me, we are only about 90 minutes from my family when we arrive in England. Good Luck

Re: does somebody goes to London by car

We go by Eurotunnel every easter to england, it take us 11 hours door to door. its a nice drive and there are plenty of places to stop and eat if you need to. The road there has about 6 tolls so u will need to take euros with you to pay this the dearest one is 24 euro i think or there abouts. We find it cheaper by Eurotunnel and you have the freedom of the car when u get there.

My question is, not having done the journey for years - do you have to book ahead for the channel crossing either by boat or tunnel or can you just turn up?

BEST TO BOOK imo, HOWEVER YOU CAN TAKE THE RISK AT NOT SO BUSY TIMES IF YOU ARE PREPARED TO WAIT.

Speaking of Easyjet, it looks like they are opening the BSL/MCR route again from October.

Re: does somebody goes to London by car

we often drive over to the uk with 3 young kids in tow. We just got back we flew over and I stayed for 3 weeks with family and my husband drove to collect us.. it goes fairly quickly he did the drive in 9 hours and with the kids and some extra stops was 10 hours door to door... we use the channel tunnel book the tickets if you get there early 95% of the time we just got on the next train on the way there always have to wait going folkstone to calais though but i think cause we go on the early morning trains these are booked full.. prefer the drive to flying only took 3 hours extra with the travel to the airport, picking up rental car and driving back to where we stayed it took 7 hours from when we left our house... lots of waiting around etc so i think even the kids preferred the car plus can bring back more things as no weight limits...

Re: does somebody goes to London by car

Have you tried the train - kids just love it!

At Christmas, July/August. half term and Easter- I would never dream of NOT booking for the Tunnel. We usually travel low season and mid-week - so we just turn up sometimes.

Never taken the tunnel. always the ferry, prefer the Dunkirk crossing, nicer ships, tall ceilings, great for viewing the sea. Usually cross around mid-night, Little traffic on road then in UK. This ferry is 2hrs, but relaxing break from driving. Usually plenty of seats & they dont mind if people want to lay down on the seats providing you take your shoes off. Once arrived Calais without pre-booking. It is much cheaper to book on-line than at the port. If you can book a couple of weeks in advance then you would normally get a cheap price, bar peak times like Christmas when all prices are high including flights. (The Dunkirk crossing have let us get the boat before or the boat after the one booked on occasion of us arriving early or late without penalty - so far - hope they keep that practice)

We usually avoid the French Toil roads. I like the journey through the countries seeing different scenery. Dislike travelling in either heavy snow or heavy rain. If you are travelling in winter, particular the snow time ensure you have a good car with good tires.

We usually stop off at one of the Large supermarkets to do both shopping as well as price checks. Cora restaurants so far have good reasonable lunch choice at low cost & I love their self service ice & water machine tee-hee - English instructions
