Car lease vs. second hand

Moving to Basel in October and I am investigating owning a car while out there.

The pre-hire councillor we spoke to said that leasing was a bad idea, as it would be difficult/expensive if I decided to leave Switzerland during the lease period, and that second hand is preferable.

What are the thoughts from ex-pats? My role is permanent in Basel with limited (if any travel) outside of Switzerland.

If second hand is the usual thing, how difficult is financing and should the finance be done through the car dealer or a bank?

Thanks in advance.

Need some details, how much do you want to spend 5k, 10k or 50k? & what do you want to buy?

I've been looking at autoscout for Merc Cxxx, BMW 3xx, VW Passat and Mazda 6 estates - diesel, manual, <70k km - and they seem about CHF 30k or so.

If leasing, probably leaning towards Merc Cxxx or BMW 3xx estate.

Trying to work out which is the better option. CHF 30k for a 2nd hand car will wipe out most of my fluid cash while a lease will spread the costs out over a few years

Re: Car lease vs. second hand

One of the attractions of leasing is spreading the cost but also if you get a good deal it includes servicing upto 100,000 or 10 years which ever is the sooner. My advice is leasing is the way to go as you can always sell on the lease if you have to leave early but seeing as you have a permanent contract, time will fly by and you may find that it would have been a small price to pay for the lease option compared to having your liquidity at hand. Some of the main dealers are doing great deals on cars 2 - 4 years old which often have less than 10,000km per annum (the usual allowance). There are leasing rates as low as 1.9% and 3.9% for the sort of cars you mention.

Is your contract already signed and set in stone? I negotiated into mine that if I were terminated then all lease/monthly contracts signed would be paid off by the company. Therefore I decided to lease rather than purchase used (which is how I've always bought cars). The lease allowed me to walk away if the worst happens whereas if I bought used...I'd be stuck trying to sell a car on top of all my other worries. Otherwise, I'm looking forward to the next four years in CH.

Unlike most EU countries, Diesel in Switzerland is not cheaper than gasoline. I would not restrict the search to Diesel cars yet.

On the other hand - annual car tax is lower for Diesel, so this alone + the occasional travel in neighboring countries should make it more interesting...

Re: Car lease vs. second hand

the question is impossible to answer!

How long is your contract? is it perm or temp? what permit will you have?

ETA downsides to leasing

KM limit - go over it and the costs are huge, if you use up your limit and before the end of the lease and then want to get out of the lease its going to cost you! just have a search on here for people wanting someone to take over there lease, the figures are scary! you would need to PAY someone to take over the car.

30K is a lot of cash for S/H, and depreciation is going to be quite fast. Repairs are extortionate over here, so older, higher mileage cars go cheap because of the scare factor of repairs. Bad when you want to sell/terminate the lease.
I bought a higher mileage older S6 V8 estate. Faster than I needed , not diesel, but it had depreciated already, and I was only using it for weekend trips & abroad. 7K should get you something like that today. I never had an unexpected repair in 5 years.

Otherwise if you are not a petrol head type, I would go for a lease myself and get a clause like acd483 suggested.

But doesn't this dependent on which canton you reside in?

Re: Car lease vs. second hand

If 30k will use up most of your disposable cash, why not look at something slightly better value? I got something very similar to this a couple of years ago (this one even has winter wheels and tyres included) and have been perfectly happy with it so far. There is plenty of choice on Autoscout around the 15k mark. It has the same boot space as the BMW 3-series Touring too...

Re: Car lease vs. second hand

If you have a working permit and a work contract you can easily get a loan online from the Migros Bank

https://secure.migrosbank.ch/pcasext...e.jsp?lang=de#

Do you really want to lock yourself into a 3 year contract? Leasing cars are NOT easily sold onwards, but owned cars are.

Re: Car lease vs. second hand

Thank you all for your comments - its certainly provided food for thought and I think the right answer here is to shop around when I get there as there are pro's and cons to both options.
Not so worried about diesel vs. petrol, as in my experience diesel is cheaper to run unless the cost of diesel is significantly more expensive.
Trying to avoid cheap 2nd hand cars. Had a few of them in the UK and spent more keeping them running than if I got a decent car to start with.

Just a thought - If you really expect to do very little travelling, perhaps investing in an annual rail pass would be more economical? And maybe even covered by the company?

You can get some excellent 2nd hand deals, also look at the ex demonstrator market, again some great deals to be had.

My Volvo C30 is still available if you want to take over the lease. Another 2 1/2 years to run.

Re: Car lease vs. second hand

the typical rates for financing S/H cars are around 8.5% onward, while leasing offers can be got for 1.9%, 3.9% etc. Leasing is the more preferred option here and very few companies have financing options. GE Money is among the more popular for financing

To me leasing challenges are - early termination, fixed Km's but if these are not an issue for you then go for it.

I agree to your point about going for something with a slightly higher budget (can get some warranty etc thrown in from the garage) is a safer option with the S/H cars. Just my opinion, pay extra but have that peace of mind...

Re: Car lease vs. second hand

A cheap, budget option with recovery help and limited loss of 3k..
Join the TCS, get a car you like off Autoscout, sort by mileage and price, inspected by them, MFK just under 2 years left, pay about 3K tops for it. If it breaks after purchase TCS will tow you to a garage where you can have it fixed or give it to the garage worst case.

It is a cheap car so you only need 3rd party insurance. If you buy a VW or Audi most garages have no trouble fixing them. This works well for cars like an Audi S6, High end BMW, Merc, or small VW/Audi/Skoda. Smaller cars often cost more.

If you're going to be working for a major company e.g Roche, Novartis, Actelion etc.. It might be worth investigating what fleet discounts are on offer. I was offered an on the spot 10% discount off any Merc just for showing a copy of my contract, on top of all the other bonuses and discounts.
