There is more to the interior than the look. Everything you see there has been engineerred to "feel" right, from the material to the feedback a button or knob gives when pushed. Even the sound of the click is thought through. And that is in short what even the most expensive US cars do not have. At all. I have been in a Cadillac that looked similar to that Navigator photo. Everything looks good. But as soon as you sit on the seat or touch anything it just feels completely wrong. They often don't even get the basic ergonomics right and put buttons in stupid places. The buttons on the wheel of the Navigator look like those: No way to operate them while holding the wheel. Very different from the Audi or BMW.

I gave your post a GENERAL Like, however,

The germans (particularly BMW) were the first to pioneer the concept of ergonomics properly in cars, and it shows. They have entire departments dedicated to it.

I think the US companies are still figuring out how to pronounce it...

Well, it was a Cadillac XLR and the interior looked like this:

Nowhere near the Mercedes SL but not as nasty as the average plastic US cars tend to use.

Didn't Clarkson absolutely slate this in "The good, bad and the ugly", and specifically point out just how crap the interior was?

For an impartial view of the market I recommend the JD power survey. Details filled out by actual owners of the cars.
True Delta is an interesting reliability and mileage survey. As they got more cars they get even more accurate.

Have you ever driven an Escalade or a Navigator?
Not a Navigator but a Ford Expedition. Awesome for a road trip in the western states with four people and tons of bags but feels like an oceanliner on wheels.
No fun in the US and probably a nightmare here.

As far as I'm concerned, the most people do here (and yes, especially here in Switzerland) is being stuck in traffic and for that you need a decent stereo, AC and comfy seats..
Then get a Volvo.
Best. Seats. Ever. (...and some pretty decent sound systems too)

That's why there are options.

Hmmm, have you tried the Renault Velsatis seats? Oh man...closest thing to a Rolls Royce.

Rides well too. Well, for the 500 metres of driving you'll be able to manage anyway. Reliable, they're not.

I beg to differ, the quality of the leather is beyond bad and will look scuffed and wrinkled pretty soon.

I was just looking at the Passat specs and this hit my eyes:
Quote:
Passat (North American, South Korean and Chinese markets)

This says a lot, doesn't it?

Apparently the US market has about the same demands as SK and China?

...and it gets better

The Volkswagen Passat NMS won the 2012 Motor Trend Car of the Year.

Which means, the (much) lower spec European car is the US car of the year! I wonder how are the rest of the cars that did not make it.
And let's not foget: the passat is a not a premium car and still it beats the so-called "premium" US cars such as lincoln or cadillac.

The Car of the Year award is highly subjective, it's not some kind of comparison test.

I'm actually wondering what's so special about the NMS Passat, but then cars such as the Toyota Camry, Honda Civic or the dreadful 2002 T-Bird won that award in the past...

Re: What US car is good in CH?

The 2002 T-Bird was an amazing improvement on the previous generation. My kids saw a coupe from the front the other day and thought it looked fantastic.

People these days are thinking about a cheaper car that saves them money. VW's have a good solid feel on the road, and the Passat TDI must be one of the most economical cars in the US, hybrids included.

If you are going for super efficiency, the 2000 model Audi A2 3L, a 4 door small car, realistic 88mpg, 100mpg on a long run. Today there is the new Polo, almost as efficient, cheap, no batteries or complicated technology, should still manage MPG figures in the 80s and higher.

Lower spec? The US Passat is higher speced than its European counterpart and is also bigger in size.

If "spec" means electronic gadgets, maybe. If spec means also better materials, more modern motors, better noise protection and more comlex construction, definitely no.
