BMW 330ci - any idea what's wrong with it?

My car is seriously under-powered at the moment and keeps stalling when idling or at low speed. She is a 2000 model with 85k miles on the clock.

I don't think it's an electronics problem as there are no lights on on the dashboard. I have just put a new air filter in but she is still not running properly. A friend suggested that it may be the fuel filter.

I can, of course, take it to the BMW garage here (Malta) but just to run a diagnostics test is euros 120 and I can't book her in for at least three weeks. So I was wondering if anyone has any idea (apart from the above) what the problem could be.

Thank you - that's pretty comprehensive! I have just had the fuel injectors cleaned too (forgot to mention that).

I was really wondering if anyone who owns, or has owned, a similar car has experienced this (I know there are some BMW enthusiasts on here).

sounds a bit like a problem with the air-mass sensor.

Is that the same as the air-flow meter?

MAF = Mass Air Flow = air flow meter.

an garage should be able to do a read ut - it doesnt need to be BMW,

you can buy the reader on ebay for about 25 euro also.

good idea to have a look around that no pipes are split or come off

Re: BMW 330ci - any idea what's wrong with it?

your MAS could be the culprit and is really easy to take of. have a look on youtube. you can clean it and put back on. see if that fixes it but I doubt that is the issue.

As with these cars it can be several things so before you go spending money have them read the codes. It will be the cheapest way of doing it. (dont buy one of the cheap readers as it will give you generic codes and 1/2 will bring you no closer to the problem.

Go smell the exhaust once. If it smells like rotten eggs it might be your cats that need replacement. you are at the km where it could be an issue and those are the symptoms ( together with the exat symptoms of many other things. )

Id advice you to join a bmw forum and have a look around for similar issues and what the verdict was.

Here is one i personally like :

Re: BMW 330ci - any idea what's wrong with it?

I had a 325ci, 2002 model (E46, no facelift), about the same problem. Did the problem ocured out of nowhere or after you have cleaned the injectors/changed the air filter?
You should check the following:
- wiring and plugs around air filter/injectors (maybe the MAF plug got disconnected);
- MAF itself (this is the easiest to check, just disconnect the plug and hear if the engine starts to run irregular; you can clean the MAF but it will work only for the moment most of the times, you'll end up buying one anyway);
- idling motor;
- one lambda probe sending erroneous info to the injection computer (that was wrong with the one I had);
- cat (this is quite easy to diagnose... either you look under the car after 10 minutes of driving and literally see the cat glowing, or you check the temperature of the car floor on passenger's site, near the handbrake);
- fuel pump or fuel filter;
- injection computer.

Good luck!

underpowered?....I would check the spark plugs. With 85k km chances are that it might only need a tune up. If the spark plugs are ok, then I would check the battery. Another thing it could be is the alternator going bad.

Well, this is what I would check based on previous experience. Good luck.

Don't forget to check wipers' motor as well. And the air freshener!

Re: BMW 330ci - any idea what's wrong with it?

Well, sometimes people spend loads and loads of money on fixing things while thinking that the problem is very complex, when in reality, it just might not be. Mechanics will tell you, of course, that the problem can only be fixed at the dealership or a garage.

But if the car has been well taken care off, and it only has 83k km (which is really not much), then it shouldn't be nothing out of the ordinary. So yeah, I would try the simple things first, and if the problem is more complex, then if I were you, I wouldn't buy another crappy bmw again.

But yeah while you are at it, replace the air freshener too...

Isn't "free advice" cheaper in Malta than Switzerland?

I don't have a clue how to help you, but suggest you PM DodgyKen as he knows everything there is to know about BMWs. At least he always did when I asked him something about mine.
