I believe so - the car has to be owned BY YOU for at least 6 months before you import it.

Yes, you need to own it six months before you arrive here, not just six months.

Assuming you already live in Switzerland:
You can either buy the car yourself and get the the foreign sales tax back ~20%, but you have to pay the Swiss import sales tax of 8% plus the car import tax of 4% plus CO2 import tax depending on your cars CO2 emission and weight.

Or you in-law buys and registers the car in his name aboard. After 6 month you import it into Switzerland, where you have to pay 8% import sales tax and 4% car import tax on the now lower second hand value of the car. No CO2 tax. Disadvantage you will not get the foreign sales tax back unless you in-law acts as a business and not as a privat person AND you cannot drive the car in Switzerland during this 6 month waiting time.

What to do? If the CO2 emission is around 130 g/km do the first option. Is the emission considerably lower than 130 g/km use a CO2 broker which will give you money back! If it is considerably higher than 130 g/km it may be better to wait 6 months before you import and use it here.
