Daily commute between Basel and Freiburg, Germany

We live in Basel but my daughter (18 years old) will be studying at the University of Freiburg across the border in Germany. What is the best discount travel card that she can use for a daily commute between Basel and Freiburg?

Re: Daily commute between Basel and Freiburg, Germany

You might try Deutsche Bahn ( Freiburg to Basel Bad Bf ) for a monthly Abo.

http://www.bahn.de/p/view/angebot/pe...schueler.shtml

From Basel Bad Bf to your place perhaps another Abo.

And welcome to the forum.

Re: Daily commute between Basel and Freiburg, Germany

Get a Strecken-Abo from Freiburg to Basel with Deutsche Bahn if you are just going to commute.

If you plan to do other travelling in Germany, then get a BahnCard 100.

If you are young/student then other discounts may be available - go to Freiburg railway station and ask there.

Re: Daily commute between Basel and Freiburg, Germany

As indicated in the earlier response, it may be cheaper to travel to Basel Badischer Bahnhof (German Railway station) instead of Basel SBB (Swiss railway station) and then taking local transport.

Re: Daily commute between Basel and Freiburg, Germany

There is no need to get to basel bad, there is a vending machine of the german railways
in the SBB Station (I think between Track 5and6 or between Track 3and 4)

or make an online booking:

Re: Daily commute between Basel and Freiburg, Germany

My daughter wound up getting:
(1) The semester ticket (for students, purchased from Deutsche bahn), which allows you to take any public transportation in the Freiburg region
(2) and the Regiocard for the Basel and Lörrach region

However, you have several other options in addition to what was mentioned in previous responses as well:
Option 1:
You need 2 passes, one for the Lörrach region and another for the Freiburg region.
- For Freiburg region, my daughter has a semester ticket, which costs 78 euros and is valid for 6 months.
- For Lörrach region, you need a monthly pass, which costs about 40 euros.
This option does not allow you to ride ICE trains. However, you will be able to use any public transportation in both regions.
Option 2:
You can combine the Basel and Lörrach regions into one card (RegioCard) for 96 CHF. In addition, you still need the Freiburg region semester ticket for 78 euros.
Option 3:
You can get a point to point pass, which is more expensive but allows you to take the ICE trains. However, you will not be able to use any other public transportation.
Good luck
