Assuming you saved around Fr.10k buying through the programme, couldn't you then sell the car for Fr.10k discount compared to the market?
2nd hand market price will be below what you paid, no dealer will ever sell bellow 'market', what you pay with a special deal is 'market price' on a new car, once it's second hand it will be 20% less straight away , which is the dealers margin give or take a few percent .

Re: Buy [car] new with big discount or second hand

Thanks for all the feedback; so far I gather that I am going to lose big money when I resell no matter what I do. I don't want to lease because I have done the math. (i.e. 750 chf per month for 36 months 27,000 chf plus deposit of a few thousand chf = 30,000 chf). These are the numbers I found but may be off since I am not over there yet. This means I could buy a 30,000 chf car and give it away and break even.

I am using cash so financing is not important (selling two cars here to fund the purchase).

The volvo deal is only for expats so not available for swiss citizens. Basically the car I priced out is around 55,000 chf but I am getting for 37,000 chf all in (including taxes). That means I am around 18,000 chf ahead. I recognize that it will not have the same warranty and free service so that makes a difference for resell.

It basically boils down to buying a 2-3 year old Skoda/ VW for around 25k which would have less features or the new volvo which is loaded. I figure I will lose around 15k on either meaning the Skoda would sell for 10k in 3 years ( 6 years old for the car) and the Volvo would sell for around 22K which would be 3 years old.

Am I way off or missing something? 22K for the Volvo would be 50% down in retail in 3 years. We expect to put standard mileage on it (i.e. around 15k Kilometers a year).

We are coming over next week for a house hunting trip so we plan to go to ROC to look at the used and try and get a feel for those.

I think that was the question I was asking. Using ninertown's example, he could get a CHF55K volvo for CHF37K.

IK35 says that no one would buy the volvo second hand because it does not have the normal Swiss package.

Let's assume that the equivalent Swiss Volvo would be CHF22k in the market when its time to sell it second hand. Couldn't ninertown find a buyer for it at say, a comparatively very cheap price of CHF12k? That is a depreciation of CHF25k compared to CHF33k... still quite some savings!

you're getting 1/3 off, but it's a non 'Swiss' car without free servicing. I suspect 25% is possible to anyone on the Swiss model.

I suspect you will not get a cash offer from a Dealer of 20k for a non Swiss car with 45k in 3 years timel. Just using 25% annual deprecation you end up with 15.6k as a final value, probably about right.

mfk is performed when there is a change of owner
Not any more (used to be the case).

Now, you just get the plates and MAYBE they call you in some time later.

mmm how recent was the change?

i bought a car 2 months ago, its MFK was 1 year old, and it needed a MFK before they gave me the plates for it.

How old was the car, sounds odd to me.

Re: Buy [car] new with big discount or second hand

Bought two motorcycles this year, registered both without doing an MFK (the local mechanic told me that this is how it works now), one even from another canton.

I bought through that program. You will not sell your car because the warranty is only two years and it comes without 10 year free service.

It makes sense to buy from the program if you plan to keep your car till the wheels come off. Just lease something locally for 3 years.
Is it the case for all used cars in Switzerland that they come with 10 years of free servicing?

I doubt they do, however you need to understand what is actually free, changing the oil, but they charge loads for the oil, repairs not covered or parts, just 'servicing'

They are more picky after 10 years old, within a year should be ok.
