Yearly GA card cancellation fee?

I just recently moved to Switzerland and tried to a monthly GA card today. The woman at SBB told me that you have to have lived in Switzerland for at least 6 months if you wish to pay monthly, unless you have a guarantor (they send someone else your bill).

I have a flatmate with a GA card, which means I can get the duo deal. However, it wouldn't be fair to make him responsible for my bills (Guarantor), especially since I haven't known him for long.

Therefore, my only option is to take the GA yearly duo for 2350 CHF. I was wondering how its calculated if you were to cancel before 12 months? I am confused by the wording on the SBB site: "If you no longer require your annual GA travelcard, you can return it. There is a charge of 23 percent of the purchase price for the first month of validity and seven percent for any additional month."

Does this mean you lose: (percent of 2350)

1 month (23%) = 540.50
2 month (30%) = 705
3 month (37%) = 869.5
4 month (44%) = 1034

For example, if I were to cancel after 2 months, i'd lose 705 CHF, but if I were to cancel after 4 months, then i'd lose 1034 CHF? Is this correct?

I have only been here two weeks, so i'm not 100% sure if i'll be here a year yet. Would it be worth taking the risk to save a significant amount of money, especially for exploring the country? I currently have a half fare card, but the GA duo option would work out to be a lot cheaper.

Get a 1/2 fare card and then buy a monthly subscription like this

I have gone through the 'pain' of returning a GA within 3 months of use

I already have a half fare card, which can't be used with GA. You can only pay GA monthly (have to lived in CH for at least 6 months) or yearly.

With a half fare card even if I only went to Zurich for the day with ZVV it would cost me 12 CHF. If I get the yearly GA duo then it will only cost me about 6.5 CHF a day, less than half the price of ZVV and I can also go anywhere else in the country. I'd say that's probably worth the risk.

You can also have add-on cards to the halffare pass - for the day or for a month. Depending on what you plan on traveling normally, a GA might still make more sense, though. http://www.sbb.ch/en/travelcards-and...-on-cards.html

Otherwise, I think your math is correct. You might want to confirm with SBB on when you can cancel it though - from the website, it says something about being able to cancel it after four months. http://www.sbb.ch/en/travelcards-and.../services.html

Re: Yearly GA card cancellation fee?

Dear Aussie Swiss,

I have been wondering the same thing about the wording of this 23% and 7% thing. I actually only need a GA for the next 5 months, and I'm trying to figure out what the cheapest route to go is. Here are my options:

Buy a monthly GA with my HalbTax- 375 CHF-- can eliminate this, bc the next thing is cheaper...
Get a GA with a monthly subscription- 310/month, and then cancel after 5 months
Get a yearly GA, and deposit the GA for a 6th month, and then return it.

Can anyone help me with the math and the wording?? Is it 7% of the remaining cost of the GA, if you pro rate it? I'm very confused.

Thanks for any help..

Re: Yearly GA card cancellation fee?

A GA is wonderful if you're travelling round Switzerland a lot, but if you spend most of your time in and around Zurich and Winterthur, you might get by with a Regenbogen card from the ZVV. You can buy that monthly, no problem.

Ask at your local ticket office. They should have info in English.

Re: Yearly GA card cancellation fee?

Go to any rail station and ASK !

It's a simple calcuation very clearly indicated when you buy a GA and there is absolutely zero negotiation room.
