My story of getting Learner's Driving license and clearing Sailing theory test

Dear EF members,

My introduction post to very useful EF. I arrived in Zurich 2 months back. After finding an apartment next big step was to initiate driving and sailing license process. The posts in the forum guided me through. I describe below my journey, please bear in mind I have no affiliation to the below institutions, I found them via EF. I mention the dates and price as well to encourage EF members to go for it and not to postpone. :

Learner's driving license:
Forms are available at http://www.stva.zh.ch

1. First aid course: http://www.sanarena.ch/ (18th Aug, CHF 175)
2. Optician: Fielman, Bahnofstrasse Zurich (CHF 10.50)
3. Books/CDs for the theory test preparation: "eDriver" and "Driving Today" (approx. CHF 110). Both are available in English.
4. Theory exam: I took the theory exam. on 29th Aug. I found 3 days of preparation to be sufficient. Questions were almost identical to ones on the CD. Received my Learner's driving license on 31st Aug ( CHF 65 + CHF 15). I was able to take the exam in English.

After this I was able to start my driving lessons. A friend of mine is helping me currently but plans to take 4-5 lessons from a professional school before the practical test.

5. Verkehrskunde or VKU: www.nvk-stadelhofen.ch (10th Sept, CHF 300). I found it to be the only school conducting VKU course in English.

Sailing theory test:

Forms are available at http://www.stva.zh.ch/internet/sicherheitsdirektion/stva/de/StVAsf/SFmb.html

and it's much simpler as no photograph or optician's verification is required.

1. Theory test preparation: Ordered the CD which includes the book, online (22nd Aug, CHF 139)
http://www.click-me.ch/schiffstheorie-lernsoftware/schiffstheoriekurs.html
CD contained a PDF version of book. The book and the tests on CD are available in English. Spend couple of hours in the evening last week to go through the book.

2. Theory test: Took the theory test on 19th Sept. Theory test can be taken in English at least in Zurich. 30% of the questions were little bit trickier than the ones on the CD but 70% of the questions in the exam were covered by the tests on CD.

As I mentioned before, this post is about saying thanks to useful posts by other EF members and encourage newbies like me to initiate the process.

cheers
John

@John9: Welcome to Switzerland and the forum.

Wonderful first post and it's good to know that the EF search function actually works - at least for some!

Best of luck with the driving test when you get there.
