Selling motorbike in Switzerland

Hi all,

I have a motorbike I want to sell soon because we're moving out of the country. I thought of simply riding in into a dealership and asking, but I'm afraid I'll get ripped off. Can anybody tell me what the best procedure would be? Specifically, I'm interested in the following:

1. Does a dealer get a fixed fee, or a percentage of the sale? How much in either case?
2. How likely is it they would agree to accept it now, but sell it and pay me in Spring (which is a much better time to sell)?
3. Can anybody recommend an honest dealer in/around Zurich?

Thanks.

www.ricardo.ch

Start at CHF 1,-- and you will be amazed at how quickly people bid the price up.

NO dealer is going to buy it from you at this time of year.

Wow, that's dispiriting. Even if I'm happy to wait for the money until Spring?

Re: Selling motorbike in Switzerland

and you think, knowing the price of Swiss rentals, that he is going to store it for 6 months?

Sell it today and take the loss.

Re: Selling motorbike in Switzerland

The dealerships I've seen would've no problem in principle to store my bike over the winter at minimal cost. The question is whether they would be willing to without using it as an opportunity to rip me off in the process.

Since you seem to have an idea how these things work, maybe you could also answer my key question -- does the dealer usually get a fixed cut or a percentage and how much (say, assuming the bike is worth CHF 4500)?

Anyway, thanks. I think your advice is sound, and I'm fine taking a loss now.

Please don't be afraid, it's guaranteed !

Depends what bike it is, if it's a small one then you have more chance, maybe try and get somebody here to sell it on your behalf for a commission ?

It is a small, desirable bike (Kawasaki W650), which I think could be sold very easily -- in Spring.

Interesting thought re: selling by proxy. Got anybody in mind? ;-)

Re: Selling motorbike in Switzerland

I am sure you would consider it "being ripped off" if you took it into a dealer.

Maybe if it is something really special, say HRD, or a Goldie, you might get a deal like that from a specialist.

Really Ricardo, with an honest explanation (in German and English) that you are leaving CH and need to sell it. Let us know too.

Re: Selling motorbike in Switzerland

Dealers offer the lowest possible price that they can get away with (then usually half that), as they need to throw as little money as possible to pretty it up, and then sell on quickly to turn a profit - unfortunately now is not the time for quick sales, so a dealer would need to discount to sell = little or no margin. If he's had a good year so far, he probably can't be bothered with the hassle.

It would go something like this: he would walk round it shaking his head and tutting all the time, explain at all the things and their costs he'd have to do, get out a little blue book and a calculator and end up showing you a figure that would just about buy you a decent bicycle.

As suggested auction it on Ricardo, and take a hit if necessary.

...... but first take a couple of pics., add a full description of specs. and place it here on EF for sale - you may get more luck in striking a deal than with a dealer. If nothing else, you'll have a more realistic idea of what you're likely to get, after the bike boys have pulled you ad. apart.

Thanks for that. Yes, it's a beautiful bike, and sought-after here. I will try to have an ad up soon (I'll cross-link it here as well) and you may even land yourself a bargain!

Re: Selling motorbike in Switzerland

I did something similar in the states a few years ago. I bought a bike (Triumph Sprint ST 1050) from a dealer, with the agreement that I would sell the bike back to him after 2 months. I thought that this would be cheaper than renting for 2 months - a bad mistake. The deal ended up costing me over $4000.- because he sold it to me at the normal sales price, then bought it back for the "book" price, which is about 25% lower.

LOL. I'm size 36 myself (on a good day), and parts of the bike can still be seen when I'm on it. So wait for the ad before deciding!

Re: Selling motorbike in Switzerland

You can check current dealer prices at www.motoradhandel.ch, you can also use the platform to sell your own bike.
