I am just trying to work out our monthly outgoings based on one of us working in Basel and the other in Zurich. Acording to the SBB website, a monthly season ticket between the two cities is going to cost CHF326. Is there any way to get this down using the bewildering array of discounts and special fares? Also I think I read on here (damn my search skills) that you can claim tax relief on travel expenses. Is this true?

Don't ask me about tax relief for travel expenses. But I'm pretty sure it has been covered before.

There are few options to lower the price for a monthly ticket. To make it a yearly ticket, or to buy discounted Reka-Rail vouchers at Manor (4% rebate) or whereever they may be sold at a discount. (Not to be confused with normal Reka-cheques. The topic has been discussed before, too.)

Have you thought about a GA cost is 275 per month and that allows Swiss wide travel or you can have it for 2990 if you pay a year in advance.

Yes you can claim tax relief on travel expenses assuming you need to fill in the appropriate tax form ie earnings above 120K etc...
