One year old used VW cars in ROC

Hi everyone,

I am thinking of buying an used car in Geneva. I have noticed that there are a lot of cars availble which are only 1-1,5 years old and they are offered with 30% discounts from new price. For example VW Golf in ROC. I wonder why previous owners wanted to get rid of almost new cars. Is it worth to buys such cars?

Thanks in advance for pieces of advice.

Renters (Geneva airport) or demos.

Check the "mileage".

Mileage is about 10000-30000 km. I think renters should have more mileage.

No, because rental cars get changed once they hit a certain age or millage, somewhere between 15-20k km usualy.

Most new cars depreciate 15% the moment they are driven off the forecourt, so 30% after 1.5 years is not that remarkable.

Given the high expat turnover in Geneva, there is a good chance that they are cars that were returned to the dealer after the lease expired. Most leases I've looked at allow 15,000 kilometers per year.

Re: One year old used VW cars in ROC

Roc is the 'second hand car' arm of amag which is the biggest supplier/importer of vw cars in Swiss.
Actually most of the cars on the forecourt are from employees of amag. They keep the cars until they reach a certain mileage normally between 9-12 months.

We bought a vw passat that was 1 year old, that was 2 years ago and we had no problem.

Nobody in their right mind would lease a car for such a short period, it would cost far too much !

But companies have deeper pockets than individuals and can write off the expense.

Yes, I would say so. Just make sure you get a warranty for at least 6 months and if possible a PPI done on the car (shouldn't cost you very much through TCS)...

Why am I always ending up explaining the world? Ok: VW employees and probably all Amag staff as well get decent discounts on new cars. Because if you run a VW shop, you do not want your employees to arrive in a Toyota... so you got to give them an incentive to buy your own brand. Not sure about Switzerland, but in Germany, they get easily some 30% off the list price.

Problem: Your staff would start to buy cars for all his friends and family with the corporate discount they get.

Solution: They only get the discount if they keep the car for at least one year registered on their name and then they can sell it on. Since a one year old car is usually worth around 70% of the new price does this in fact mean that they get a car for next to nothing except of the running costs.

The ROC will therefore have a mix of demo cars, corporate lease returns and a lot of staff cars.

I once bought a blue a4 from a re-importer. He had 15 almost exact same cars. They were all one year old cars previously registered on workers of the Audi plant in Ingolstadt... so this phenomenon is not limited to Amag, but the same for all second hand car shops.

You are very mistaken. When you are relocated for a two year contract and require a car, the cost of a car lease is frequently negotiated into the relocation package. If you don't believe me, feel free to walk into the nearest big dealership and ask for the diplomatic or corporate leasing department.

Then there's huge numbers of people who are out of their right minds. It's really considered very normal practice by lots of large employers.

Re: One year old used VW cars in ROC

In addition to what Treverus said above, I'll share some of my experience from my time working with Volkswagen. At the time I was working there, they had overproduced several models. Rather than discounting the price of the new car (which could undermine overall pricing power as well as hurting the value of used cars), the company came up with a clever way of flooding their network with 'nearly new' vehicles that could be sold at a discount alongside 'new' vehicles, in a bid to increase sales overall.

Staff (and contractors) were allowed to lease these cars at incredibly low rates -- I leased a Seat Ibiza for around CHF90- per month -- on the condition that they were returned after 3 months or 5'000km, whichever happened first.

My boss, at the time, had a long commute of nearly 150km each way. She would get a new car every few weeks as she hit the mileage threshold. It seemed crazy, but actual the economics behind it (for VW's sales network) were very sound.
