UK car in CH for 6 months

I have read a number of threads on here about taking UK cars into CH but most people are intending to use them on a permanent basis.

I start a new job in CH in a few weeks. I plan to drive over in our 5 year old mini with enough clothes etc to get me going. I will have a flat by then, and hence an address, work permit etc. I will keep the car with me for just under 6 months and then it will return to the UK and I will get a LHD car.

Do I need to declare it at the border? I can keep it on UK insurance, retain my UK licence, and not put it on CH plates. Am I oversimplifying things because to me this seems to be just like an extended holiday for the car!

Re: UK car in CH for 6 months

Hi welcome to the forum.

You were not clear where you intended to get the LHD car, UK or Switzerland or somewhere else.

Back to your UK car, from an Insurance point of view, you might like to consider only keeping it for 3 months in Europe/Schengen, as a number of UK companies will give 3 months insurance within the annual UK insurance.

Believe there is only one company, good reputation, you take it for a year for Europe/Schengen, then believe the cancellation is something like 50% of remaning insurance. Get the quotes and work it out, might be OK for you.

Something I read on another thread, you have to be in UK with the car for the insurance to start, so if your insurance runs out when car in Europe you are 'stuffed'.

Re: UK car in CH for 6 months

I know someone who came from the UK and kept their car here for longer than a year. No problem. No declaration.

When invited to discuss it with the customs people, she simply agreed to take it back.

Insurance was with The AA and green card was permanent. The vehicle was too new to need an MOT but the tax circle was renewed in case the insurance decided that they had an excuse to complain. The vehicle did not return to the UK until the end of those 18 months.

Not sure about insurance and registration in the UK, but in CH you can drive with your car registered and insured in another country while residing here for up to one year without having to declare it or get it on CH license plates. One thing to bear in mind is that, since you won't be declaring when you enter the first time with the car, Swiss customs officers will calculate that one year starting on the date captured on your permit (B, L, etc.) as the first entry date.

Declair it for sure on arrival, you pay about 20 chf for a form.

Only visitors can bring a car & not mention it to customs , potentially you can be charged car tax & VAT if you smuggle it in. If you have not got the customs form you don't get the exemption to import tax free!.

It can stay on UK plates, insurance can be difficult .

Re: UK car in CH for 6 months

Thanks for the replies.

I read somewhere about a form 15.30 which must be the one that Fatman mentions. I have yet to cross a road border into CH, and one of the things that does bother me is that, for the small cost of 20-30CHF, I could get to stand in line for 4 hours or so! Still, I would rather be legal. I'll have to take the car back after a short time as it is my wife's car and she will need it back in the UK.

I'll look around at insurers and see what my current one (Aviva) offers in terms of days out of the UK. Somebody mentioned LV, perhaps that is the way to go.

Re: UK car in CH for 6 months

I used LV.com when in France with my car for the winter seasons. As I remember it was for 180days for about 20

I did ring them to check that it was ok to use the 180days continually as I was working there and they said that was OK. I cannot see CH been any different.

No need to stand in line for 4 hours, it will take 5 minutes at most. Just stop & speak to the customs, they know the drill.
