BMW GPS Radios

Hello all.

I have a BMW E46 Cabrio that I am happy with. However it is from the time where electronics/gps/iphone support/etc in radios was not that developped.

It exists indeed BMW Navigation systems and/or accessories for the telephone/iPad etc. but they are not up to what we are used to in our times.

I like my car and have no intention to "upgrade" it to a recent model, but I would also like to have a better sound/navi/phone system in the car.

There are lots of chinese offerings in ricardo and ebay of these car radios built over an embedded computer with lots of features, and I am tempted.

But I have never seen one, so I would like to know if someone on the forum has had an experience with them.

here is an example

Please share your experiences about.

Re: BMW GPS Radios

I would suggest to join technically dedicated automobile fora e.g. www.bimmerfest.com or www.bimmerforum.com where folks beat to deafth similar topics. You will most probably find few dudes who use such a navi system and can debate on pros and cons of it. Sometimes I get myself well informed there as well.

Re: BMW GPS Radios

My experience with one of these generic, Chinese made car media players was not particularly good. They appear to be feature packed, however the implementation was often lacking e.g. frequent crashes, freezing, poor quality audio/amplification and really, really bad GPS (with no TMC). There are ways to hack them to run TomTom for WinCE, but it is far from straightforward and again not all features will work.

I would get a brand name car stereo (e.g. Kenwood, Clarion etc..) which will have GPS, Video, Music etc.. and just use a double DIN adaptor. It will cost more, but you will benefit from a robust interface, features that work and regular firmware updates.
