Converting USA to Swiss driving license, but about to move to UK. Help!

Hi all,

I am hoping someone will be able to advise me- I'm a long time experienced driver and currently hold a US driving license. My husband and I are planning to move to the UK.

I am under the impression that my US driving license is not convertible to a UK one but that a Swiss license is- and therefore am considering paying for a Swiss license and then swapping it after our move.

I'm wondering if this is indeed the case- will I be able to convert my newly granted Swiss license to a UK one without having to take the exam? I've read through all the similar threads I could find but there seems to be some confusion on whether or not you can convert a Swiss license to a UK one if you didn't hold an EU license first...

Advice appreciated!

Two minutes with google finds the following document www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/~/media/pdf/leaflets/INF38.ashx which confirms that you can't exchange your US one to a UK one. You may not be able to exchange your Swiss one either though, as it clearly states:

"Note: If your driving test was not passed in the designated country that issued your current driving licence you may not be able to exchange, please contact us for advice by phoning 0300 790 6801."

The probable reason would be that in the UK you have a separate test category that only allows use of automatic cars, so to get a normal licence you'll have to have passed a test in a manual (stick), which isn't required in the US. It may be possible though to exchange, via the Swiss one, for a UK auto-only one. Anyway, I'm sure a quick call to the number above will answer your questions.
