There's only one man that may be able to do the impossible in the courtroom - you need to see if Johnnie Cochrane is available.
Didn't he recently shuffle off the mortal legal coil?

.....ooops, must of missed that. See, dishonesty doesn't pay.

The law practice he established in his name is still going, though.

Re: Help! Wife got caught running a red light...

Once I continued on red light just the moment it turned to red. I saw it last moment but there was no way I could stop. I got a fine of 250 CHF, and the letter claimed that I was missing it by less than 1 sec. (I dont remember exactly now).

Well, it was hurting to pay this 250 CHF..

But if you talk about 20 sec, I guess finding a lawyer is waste of money and time..

I used to stop by red lights but my wife didn't approve.

Re: Help! Wife got caught running a red light...

Although no one has said it explicitly yet, I suspect what happened here is that your wife went through the light as it turned red/yellow (just before it switched to green). Regardless of the fact that the red/yellow combination means the light is about to turn green, if you cross the line even a millisecond before it actually goes green, you'll set off the cameras and attract a fine.

There's a knack to it. When you see the light go red/yellow, you take your foot off the brake so that the guy behind you realizes you're not asleep at the wheel -- but you don't actually touch the gas until the light's green.

More than one person's been caught out by this -- there are a few stories here on EF, and I've heard plenty more anecdotally.

You had three seconds of yellow to stop. You played the game, you lost. If you are into gambling better play Roulette. The odds are better when red comes.

"Jumping a red light 20 seconds after it went red" could also be "jumping a red light 0.5 second before it went yellow/green", so may not be so bad.

That's why I said that no one had *explicitly* said it. Your version left ambiguity about whether they had crossed a red/yellow signal, or whether they had crossed a fully red signal.

A fully red signal is clearly a no-no, but crossing a red/yellow signal, especially if you come from a country like the US (which doesn't use this convention), might cause confusion -- which is why I pointed it out. People sometimes don't realize that crossing the red/yellow signal is forbidden.

I got a 250CHF fine for running a red light, it wasn't fair as I pulled away from the lights and the car in front stopped, leaving me in the middle of junction, lights changed, car in front moved, so did I not block road and got flashed. Nothing you can do, just pay the fine and put it down to experience.

I also got away with a CHF 250 fine for missing the redlite by 1.1 seconds; considering how often I am forced to stop crossing a junction because the guy in front decides to stop for whatever reason, I definitely must have deserved it

easier said than done

particularly if you are left waiting in congestion for 10-20 minutes for crossing a 200m street and the driver in front does not mind letting other cars move in from other lanes because he/she is busy talking on phone or just lazy to hit the gas when the line is moving

Re: Help! Wife got caught running a red light...

Whilst driving through Florida on vacation, I was amazed at the number of people running red/yellow lights. I even saw a patrol car run a yellow, followed by about 4 other vehicles who ran the subsequent red.

Maybe I'm just becoming too Swiss?

There's no such thing as "running" a yellow in the U.S., afaik. Most traffic laws say you can still enter the intersection when the light is yellow, provided it is safe (whatever that means) to get through before the light turns red. This results in a lot of folks speeding up on a yellow when they should be slowing down.

You should be all the way through by the time the light is red, but if you're not you rarely get fined. Most of the time you only get a fine if you enter the intersection on red.

And for those that don't know, turning right on red is allowed in most states unless there's a specific red arrow for right-turning traffic. Something I have to think about all the time when I am driving here, as right turns on red are not allowed.

I guess there most be a lot of Floridans in Switzerland, as I see people running for the orange all the time here, usually with at least one going through as it turns red...

Rubbish, it's easy money for a lawyer and the outcome won't change so very litrtle work to do, but a few hours to bill somebody who doesn't understand he hasnm't got a chance of getting off.

I'm not so sure. My view of Lawyers isn't always the best, but the few I have met probably would refuse to take the case because it just obviously is a waste of time. I'm hoping they're not as bad as you suggest
