So which cantons are these then ?

(by the way, transport is federal jurisdiction, not cantonal)
Sorry, my mistake. I thought some of the Alpine cantons had compulsory periods, but it seems it is a recommendation to use winter tyres and not a mandatory rule. Also think I was confusing it with the studded tyres rule that Sbrinz just mentioned. Apologies.

The first time I saw that sign I thought he was carrying explosives, as the sign looks like a sea mine, http://www.google.ch/imgres?start=20...r:25,s:20,i:79
Looks like it should be the patch worn by SVP youth party members assigned to assist Grenzwache Officers at roadblocks.

Most of the neighbouring countries have compulsory winter tyres in wintry weather.

Thats a little misleading as France does not & Germany has only fairly recently mandated winter tyres.

Studded tires are allowed in CH

Restricted to Nov 1- April 30 and maximum 80 kph and must have the appropriate sign on back of vehicle.
Exactly. Plus you're not allowed to drive on any Autobahn or Autostrasse with the exception of the A2 between Göschenen and Airolo (Gotthard tunnel) and the A13 between Thusis and Mesocco.

95% of French cars I see never have winter tyres and most only see fit to wipe snow and ice from small sections of the windscreen.

skisko has no particular reputation at present
Re: Winter tyre types and requirements?

You should not drive too much with winter tires in summer. It makes the rubber harder and the tires less effective the following winter.

At least this is the common wisdom where I grew up in Norway, and we did have a lot of the white stuff
