Got flashed speeding, what is the fine system?

I know there are lots of threads about this issue of speeding.

I'm an international student here in Switzerland and renting a car from the border (Geneva, French side).
A week ago, I was on my way to Geneva to get my macbook fixed as my project I was about to finish and due in 2 days..
I was driving on a highway A1 from Sierre - Montreaux - Lausanne - Geneva, I believed I got flashed once when the limit was 120 and I was going around 140-150 km/hr.

My friend just mentioned how strict they are here and I'm really worried
if my parents found out, I'm so dead
Any idea of when will I get the letter and how much it would cost?
Hopefully my international license won't be taken away...

Same as in most countries ..... either don't speed or don't get caught.

an international licence is only a translation document... its worthless.

look at the sticky and it mentions the speeding fines. expect a nice bill from the rental car company or a police letter.

Traffic Offences - Q & A Bullet points

If you type speeding into the search function you get the above useful link.

Good luck.

Taking in account the tolerances of the car speedometer and the radar, your looking at a fine of around 250CHF and probably no consequences to your drivers' license. If you however exceeded the speed by 30km/h including tolerances, you might be looking at a temporary driving ban, large fine and additional judicary costs. Your car rental company will probably also charge you extra for forwarding costs.

By the way, your international license cannot be taken away in any case, but you might be banned from driving in Switzerland alltogether for extreme or repeat offences.

Re: Got flashed speeding, what is the fine system?

I predict a 120-180 franc fine. If you're in a rental car, they may charge an admin fee too.

But don't worry until it arrives.

Re: Got flashed speeding, what is the fine system?

The dreaded letter normally comes within a couple weeks if you're the owner of the vehicle. Given that it's a rental, the rental company will receive the ticket in the next few weeks and then forward it on -- this can take quite some time.

I'd allow at least six weeks before wiping your brow and congratulating yourself for getting away with it...

I had to read this sentence 16 times but I am guessing you want to know what the "sweat" period is? Well, the owner of the car will normally recieve something after 4 weeks, so allow about 6 weeks if it's through a hire car company. The hire car company will most likely just charge the fine to your credit card; you may not recieve a letter directly.

I talked with the rental company the other day and they said that the letter will go directly to me, so I think I can expect it within 6 weeks then..

No, it will have to go via the rental company and the car is registered to them and the Police will address the fine to whoever owns the car. They will trhen look at it at trhe time/date work outr who was renting (you) and send it onto you. With an "administraion fee" of course.

Re: Got flashed speeding, what is the fine system?

I once translated a fine for a British acquaintance who'd hired a car in Switzerland - and it was almost a year before it reached him from the hire company. Just FYI

If it took a year to reach him, wouldn't that be too late to pay though
cause from what I've heard, the fine should be paid within a month otherwise the fine will increase??

I love the connotative differences here. If I, as an American, got flashed while speeding, I'd not be thinking about a ticket...
