Will irish penalty points affect my Swiss insurance?

Last time I was home I hired a car with my irish driving licence. I got caught speeding by a camera. So the rental company sent the details to my irish address, which was forwarded to me in Switzerland. I have to pay a EUR 80 fine and I get 2 penalty points on my licence. Fair enough, I was speeding

What I was wondering is will the points on my irish licence affect my ability to get a swiss licence and increase my car insurance premium here in Switzerland?

No, but anyway for the points to be entered you need to send the license in don't you? In which case send it to the Swiss Authorities and ask for their version of a license. They will of course issue you with one and return the Irish license to the Irish authorities who can do what the hell they like with it...

The points will be added to your Irish license but will be of no concern to you here in Switzerland.

If you hand in your Irish license for a Swiss one then as an Irish citizen the Gardai will very kindly hold your points for you, and add them when you request your Irish License back from your local motor tax office.

Oh... and in Ireland I don't think they physically enter the points on the license they are just stores on the ridiculous computer system that cost a fortune but didn't work for its first year of existence!

They sent me a form to send back with the fine payment, where I have to list my licence number. What I was concerned about was if the Swiss authorities send back my licence then Ireland will notify them (and my new swiss licence) that I have speeding points - so my insurance would go up. Maybe I'm being a little paranoid

Crap I was hoping by the time I got back to Ireland, the 2 years would have lapsed and I wouldnt have to worry about them. How thoughtful of the Garda Siochana

Just had another thought....if I pay the fine and give them the irish licence number....then wait a couple of months to exchange for a swiss licence, if the Swiss dont care about my irish penalty points...the points will already be on the irish one and should be gone by the time I get back? Or will they freeze the points from the time they get the irish licence from the Swiss authorities?

Cunning plot or ridiculously stupid idea?

As far as I know when the Swiss send your licence back then the Motor tax office effectively puts it in a drawer... ...end of story. They will not inform Switzerland of your points.

As far as I know... ... I could be wrong, the buachallí in gorm will put the points on your license but they will still count down. So if you give up your license now when you go back in two years there will still be one year of points on your license, if you go back in three there will be none. (Points last for 3 years unless they have changed it lately).

I imagine you just pay the fine and then see how many years you spend here... if you are here three years or more then chances are the points will never come back to haunt you... problem being if you are here more then three years your insurance record is reset so you will have no no claims bonus and pay through the nose for insurance. This was one of the reasons why I never changed the registration on my car, but it looks like I will have to bring it home and sell it soon anyway and then hope I am not here for more then three years so I don't see my insurance go through the roof!

Also you have a year before you need to change your license, and if you by any chance have lived in the states and have a license from there you can hand that one in instead. You will get the American one back and keep quiet about the Irish one... and get a shiny new Swiss one in the post.

For what happens while driving in Ireland on a foreign license and what happens after exchange back to an Irish one click here:

As the Swiss don't have penalty points, the sooner you exchange for a Swiss and stop collecting Irish penalty points on your Irish license I guess the better.
