texting and peddling

I was driving today and saw a guy in the bicycle lane happily peddling at full speed, no hands, head down, texting on his smart phone. I was already impressed with how fearless the bicyclists here are in traffic, but this seems downright suicidal. It was raining as well.

Any statistics/anecdotes/thoughts? Feel free to comment, just for fun.

Re: texting and peddling

Texting whilst pedalling the bike is a dangerous habit. Not sure if this is legal in CH.

Re: texting and peddling

So texting whilst driving gets you into heaven? Or is Jesus actually somewhere else nowadays?

Who knows? Maybe St. Peter is taking a day off as Gatekeeper, and JC is slumming & filling in?

Re: texting and peddling

Obviously you were sleeping during RE lessons - or you've grown up with RC myths (as opposed to protestant ones). Everyone gets to meet Jesus when they die. He then decides if they go to heaven or hell. Matthew 25:31-36

If you're in a car and you see a cyclist cycling no hands, sound your horn at them and watch them wobble. (huh, no really good evil smiley). I'm fairly sure that not being in control of your bicycle is a traffic offence here. As well as suicidally stupid.

Re: texting and peddling

It must be illegal.

A friend of mine spent a night in a cell after cycling drunk down a pedestrian street... Luckily he was too drunk to see his phone

Its resulted in a fine of either 600 or 700 chf

Re: texting and peddling

I know I may sound mean but honestly I would like to see one of the cyclists or drivers that talk on the phone or texting having an accident (without hurting anyone but themselves)!!
Why would you text or talk on the phone while you are driving or on the bike???
They need a lesson! They could hurt or kill someone!
I hate them !

Re: texting and peddling

A bike is a vehicle like a car in CH so the SAME rules apply.

This is the same for talking on the phone, texting, being under the influence etc. It you have an accident on a bike and they think you have been drinking, you will have to blow into the little machine and you will be charged if over .05

Re: texting and peddling

It seems to be 'cool' at the moment to cycle without holding the handlebars. Someone should tell them it's not cool to end up in hospital or run down some unsuspecting person.
There are even instructions on the internet for god's sake!

Re: texting and peddling

I'm actually kind of jealous. I've never been able to ride with no hands for more than a couple of seconds without having to make a desperate grab for the handlebars.

Since it started to get cold, I've seen multiple people here riding with both hands in their coat pockets as well

You know, considering we think we're the smartest beings on the planet, we do some really stupid things.

Mmmmh, I do that. Though not in CH because I don't have a bike here, but when I lived in Brussels or in Holland, all the time. I held the handlebar with one relaxed hand when required (= using the brakes ). I also used to text and answer the phone while biking, but I don't have earphones because I listen for traffic, and I do look up once in a while And now with smartphones where you can't feel the buttons (as it's all touchscreen), it's much more dangerous than when I could text without looking at the phone... So I wouldn't do it anymore.
