selling a car - actual logistics of...

ok I've seen several threads on selling cars ... advertising , working with dealers etc but can someone walk me thru the steps of selling privately ?

yes I know the buyer needs to give me a barrel of cash and I hand him the keys to my beloved beauty ( the car , not mrs g. )

how about insurance ? I simply call to cancel mine?

plates?

carte Gris ?

many thanks
g.

Re: selling a car - actual logistics of...

easiest is to meet at the OCN or mfk office. both go in and cancel the carte gris. otherwise you can give yours to the buyer and he can do it for you. you keep your plates and he/she puts on theirs. you hand in the plates to the office and that automatically cancels insurance and roadtax.(refund papers will be send by mail) They keep your plates for up to a year if you buy a different car.

Yes, best if you both go to services des automobiles, you hand in your plates and the grey card, buyer does paperwork to register in his/her name. I would never give the grey card or plates to the buyer unless you know him/her very very well. Once you cancel grey card and hand in plates, you are in the clear. Keep a copy of the cancellation of the greycard, you may need it for various reasons. Call the insurance to have it cancelled on that day. You may or may not want to draw up a written contract for the car sale. Did it with a contract once, other time not.

As for other post, your closest service des automobiles is in Nyon, assuming the buyer is living/registering in VD. If GVA, then it is a bit of a trip.

You just need to cancel your grey card & leave the rest up to your buyer.
Phoning the insurance co is a waste of time as its not possible to cancel your insurance that way, only when your plates are returned.

Out of interest what reasons may you need the cancelled grey card?

Call the insurance to have it cancelled on that day.
No need to, they will be informed by the DMV that the registration has been cancelled, and the insurance will be automatically cancelled.

I do it that way every year for several of my motorcycles.

Re: selling a car - actual logistics of...

Helpful thread. Another question if you can oblige...is there any VAT due on the sale? If so, where can I find guidance on this? Thanks in advance.

VAT only applies to new goods and can only be added by companies registered for VAT...

Re: selling a car - actual logistics of...

Thanks- this is really helpful. I am trying to sell my car but feel nervouse about it.

I have a buyer who wants to pay cash and take the car there and then .

A friend has advised that I go with him to the bank -to get the bank to check the money is OK...good point.

We then need to go to the transportation office...

However; he hasn't seen the car yet, which sounds dodgy to me.

Is it better to have a contract? If he doesn't want one, what would you do?

Advice and experience would be much appreciated. Thanks

You come with half the story?

Is it a sub-10k car? Could be going abroad.

How did you advertise and how have you had contact?

Get the money, stamp the card cancelled, get the plates, wave.

It is a 28000CHF car.
Advertised on Autoscout.ch
I have no idea where it is going.

Definitely write out a bill of sale, also a good idea to go to the bank to check the money. What make/model car is this if you don't mind me asking? Once he gives you the money and it is real, you hand over the registration card and that's it. Take your plates and hand them in or register them to your new vehicle.

Its pretty simple.

Basically declares any flaws and is caveat emptor.

How are you in contact with this person? Phone, email, etc?

Cash is the normal way, it's just 28 notes, nothing to get excited about!

Re: selling a car - actual logistics of...

It's a Mercedes S320 CDI 4M. There seem to be few around -but Mercedes themselves would only offer us 20000 due to external scratches.
Thanks for the contract. I have downloaded one from Autoscout, will check to see if any differences.

Guess that I am nervous about ensuring that I do everything by the book here.

Have texted so far. Will try and call later today but my German is bad, basic but bad.

Re: selling a car - actual logistics of...

You have a Swiss mobile number? Look it up: http://tel.search.ch or Google the number

Meet in the STVA car park.

Be familiar with the Swiss 1000 franc note.

Do the transaction inside and cancel the grey card and remove your plates from the car.

There is a nice amount of CCTV in public buildings to set your mind at rest.

Oh and borrow some time from a German-speaking friend.

You don't even need to cancel the grey card, keeping the plates is all that needed!
