Car Navi for switzerland?

Hi Posters & Readers

We currently have a Becker Navigation system for our car, which was purchased in France about three years ago.

It has about 30 countries on it, but is proving to be a little bit hopeless in Switzerland messing up, taking us thru Zurich center and just really hopeless and wasting a lot of our time in general.

Is there a particular brand that work best in CH?

My wife wanted to buy a new one in Germany this morning and I told her to hold off, till we have some local fed back from you guys.

So which is the best for CH ?

Thank you for taking the time to answer

Is the software on it up to date, if not I'd try that first?
I doubt there is a particular brand that works best in a particular country.

I have one of the better Garmin ones and it still takes me through the city because it is the quickest route.....................if there were no other cars on the road.

Agreed, make sure you are on the latest maps...

If not I would say whole hog Tomtom live 1000 0r 1005 series, they work very well and will recalculate the routes due to traffic and info over the live services very effectively..

+1 for Tom Tom.

However, taking you through Zurich might actually be the best route... certainly I would never dream of going from here to the airport around the ring road.

Note that the Zurich road layout on the west side of town for through traffic has totally changed since the westring opened 3 years ago, so a map update would probably be a first step.

Re: Car Navi for switzerland?

There are several route options - try changing them first!

We have set ours to find the quickest route and somethimes gets us through very strange roads

But never let us down!

Re: Car Navi for switzerland?

Hi Bon Bon

You are right it is not up to date and will cost 79 euros for the update since it is about three years old, we are thinking pay a little bit more and get a new one.
the other problem with our Becker is it has about 2 minutes stand by battery power, quite unless when the car is turned off.

Re: Car Navi for switzerland?

I have a Garmin nüvi with TMF. Also it has some good points of interest on it from scdb.info

I use it in the car and on the bike. Cost about a ton.

Re: Car Navi for switzerland?

from what i can see the last becker map update was in the first quater of 2011.....

for the cost of an update just look at a new GPS unit. keep in mind garmin models mainly have free map udates and traffic for life, and even if not a few hours after any update is released the update is available on various sites to download for free.

Re: Car Navi for switzerland?

Sounds like you need a Hallwag - a bit bigger than average, but flatter and much, much cheaper.

You can also easily change the directions voice to sound just like the person sitting next to you, on your travels.

Re: Car Navi for switzerland?

We have the Garmin nuvi as well which I quite like.

Do you like the system and just find it doesn't work well for Switzerland? If you like it then maybe just pay to update the maps.

If you weren't happy with it before, people have said good things about both the TomTom and Garmin.

Was happy with it only in France, gave me headaches in London, Luxembourg, and now CH

Leaning to Garmin, my wife says that they are on special in Aldi in
Germany this week.

I know we do not always agree with each other, But thank you for you input here, much appreciated

Then I would definitely consider change the system and not spend the money to update the maps. The only think I don't like about the Garmin is it seems to recalculate slowly. Does anyone else have that problem?

How much are they going for in Aldi Germany?

When you can get a connection... The whole live system is flawed due to its poor connection. I think I read that somewhere.

We have an TomTom 850(?) Live, which works fine with the exception of the odd blip and of course when it cannot connect to the Live system.

Re: Car Navi for switzerland?

I have a Tom Tom, I like it but am tired of buying all the updates. If I was to buy another one which I have been thinking about would get only the lifetime free update Garmin's. I think Tom Tom only gives you a year free, I was told that when I bought my Tom Tom, one year, but when I tried to update had to buy it.

Re: Car Navi for switzerland?

I really like my GPS. Map updates are for free and supports numerous of countries. Just connect it to your computer or use the built in WiFi receiver. Used it in South Africa, Croatia, US, Spain, Switzerland. Also many points of interest. Quite small, fits my pocket so I can even use while walking in the city. Additionally, it includes a camera and what it is really nice a full functioning GSM telephone for emergency calls.

The Manufacturer? Nokia. Mine is an E6 but you may prefer a bigger screen.
