Advice on travel from Zurich airport to Ticino

Hello,

We're flying into Zurich and need to get to Ticino. I'm having trouble finding the correct train route. Is there a direct way to get there, or is it better to fly to Lugano?

Thanks for any advice!
Diana

And why don't you stay and have a pint whilst you are here?

Link to: English version. Note that there is a train station at the airport, so be sure to choose Zurich airport in the From: field (assuming you do not want to have a pint in Zurich ). Trip to Lugano is a bit over three hours with one or two train changes.

I won't suggest flying to Lugano

There is at least a train departing every hour for Tessin (no train reservation required). Simply take the train from Zurich-Airport to Zurich Main Station (a.k.a. Zürich HB) and from there the train to Chiasso which also stops at Bellinzona, Lugano and Mendrisio.
For Locarno you will have to change train in Bellinzona

Train tickets from Zurich Airport to Lugano roughly cost ~67 Francs (adults) and 33.50 (children).

Easier is to fly to Malpensa (Italy).

Why not?

We usually do, unless we fly from Malpensa.

However, if you buy your tickets in the US, you probably have to pay extra for the Lugano leg, whereas if you buy them here it's free (same price LUG/ZRH/xxx as ZRH/xxx)

Not necessarily, there's a direct train from Zürich HB every two hours (10:09, 12:09, etc).
