train cost from romanel-sur-lausanne

Wonder if someone can help me out. I'm going to be living in Romanel-Sur-lausanne starting January(it's getting close!!!). I've been looking into the cost of the train to EPFL, and was told to check www.t-l.ch. If I'm reading this correctly it will cost Ch196 per month, because it's higher than zone 9. Does this seem right? I had originally looked into a flat in lutry and was told on this forum that it would cost CH2 everyday to get to EPFL. But Lutry is also outside zone 9 and CH196 is way more than CH2/day.
Also do kids under 6 travel for free all the time?
I just want to be sure because i'm looking into a car option..............
Cheers

I think you were probably told it would be 2 CHF each way, coming from Lutry. You can buy monthly passes from Mobilis.ch. I think you've found this chart too, but you're reading the zones wrong. 196 CHF is the price for travel within 9 or more transport zones, not for travel in zones numbered 9 and above. (The zone numbers start with 11 an go up from there). To get from Romanel to EPFL you only need to travel in zones 16, 11 and 12. A three-zone pass is 96 CHF a month. Here's a map (pdf) of all the transport zones.

Kids under six are always free, and through EPFL you will also receive a half-price card for the trains.

Thanks Heather, I too was wondering about the zone numbering. CHF96 for a month's commuting (about CHF5/working day) is pretty reasonable!

Thanks. That helps a lot. Now can I ask you something else? If I have a 3 zone pass what happens if I travel in more zones. Do I just pay extra for that bit? And do half-price cards work towards monthly passes or just single tickets?
Do you know Romanel? We looked for an apartment forever and took this place because it worked for our timing and it looked like a nice village. We're a little worried about living outside of Lausanne with 2 little kids in terms of stuff to do.
Thanks for your help
