Changing UK Driving Licence to Swiss Driving Licence

Can anyone help please?!
Does a UK national with a Swiss B permit living in Switzerland need to change a UK driving Licence to a Swiss Driving Licence, after a year, even if I don't drive or own a car here???

Thanks in advance!

Re: Changing UK Driving Licence to Swiss Driving Licence

Thanks for the link! Although I don't actually want to convert my licence as I don't need to drive here. And it will be a major hassle to convert it back should I move bck to Uk.
So if I don't intend to drive or own a car here.. is it still necessary??

I would. And it's not a major hassle when you go back.

Re: Changing UK Driving Licence to Swiss Driving Licence

You cannot drive on it in Switzerland if you have been here for more than a year, but if you have no intention of driving there is no issue.

Do you have a UK photo card licence? If so, they need renewing every 10 years and you can only do so if you are resident in the UK. (Or maintain a UK address where the application could be made from).

Whether to exchange it really depends on how long you intend to be here and the renewal date on your current licence.

Never say never.

Best to be prepared for that unforeseen or emergency situation.
It's still quite easy to drive here, without a car - renter, Mobility, hubby's when he's broken his leg skiing.

..... and as stated above, you need a valid UK address to maintain a UK licence.

Re: Changing UK Driving Licence to Swiss Driving Licence

You may as well just do it. It's a formality. Go to the office, fill in the form, join the queue, they swap your licence.

Re: Changing UK Driving Licence to Swiss Driving Licence

To change your drive license back to the UK one is very easy and you can do it from home if you have internet and a printer and then send everything by post. It doesn't take many days to have the UK license back. I have done it and it is totally hassle free.

Re: Changing UK Driving Licence to Swiss Driving Licence

It's easier to exchange it before the year is up. As 1SIX1 points out you need to have an eye test done at an accredited optician, but otherwise you just fill in the paperwork to get it exchanged. If you leave it until later I think you'd have to do the full Swiss driving test, theory and practical, and also have done a first aid course too.

Re: Changing UK Driving Licence to Swiss Driving Licence

If your here for 5 years & 1 day, you would need to take a 'kontrolfart' test, if you don't pass & remember you won't be allowed to practice here you will have to take a full driving course. Thats very expensive, as long as your photo card has not expired you can change it over for upto 5 years.

Also keep in mind travel and/or car rentals in other countries. For example Germany request that your driving license is valid in your country of residence. § 29 Abs. 3 Let. 5 FeV

Re: Changing UK Driving Licence to Swiss Driving Licence

Hey, thanks to all for all your information and advice!
So Im under the impression that I can do it hassle free for up to the first 5 years?/
Why do they need you to do it in the first year then, If it is ok (if I don't drive a car) to leave it longer??
mmm!

Re: Changing UK Driving Licence to Swiss Driving Licence

Hi All

Just to share my experience at the Bern strassenverkehrsamt...

I have been here for about 6 years and decided I should really play by the books and change my licence over to a Swiss one (I have not been driving around the Swiss in all these years. before someone points that out ).

I went into the office in Bern and took my filled in form with the eye test done and stamped on the form. Attached a pic of myself, and took my Ausweiss.

They looked at all the paper work and said ok Sir you will get your licence in a couple of days. They will also send my old UK licence back to the DVLA. They did look at my old paper licence and ask me if that's the only one I have..(to my embarrassment the licence did look like a dog had a go at it)

Seemed pretty much simple enough really..lets see if I actually get my new Swiss licence...
