Don't forget you will need to get your sight test done before you go. It only takes a few minutes (and a few francs) and many opticians will do it straight away for you.

Is he able to just change it? I thought if it wasn't done within the first year you had to go through the whole driving test process to get it. Eye test, theory and practical tests. That was some years ago, so maybe the rules have changed.

As far as reducing the penalty don't bother. Just pay up and forget about it.

If you have an acceptable license you can change for unto 5 years, it's just not valid to drive with in Switzerland after 1 year.

Depends on the kanton. Some of them do the test for you with a machine on the counter. Certainly used to be the case in Basel Stadt anyway.

Re: Cought by the police driving using my dutch driving license, after 12 month!

I'm pretty sure the rule is that if you drive you must change it over between 12months, but if you don't actually drive, you have 5 years to change it over.

I'm planning to switch mine over in the next couple of weeks - having been here for almost 5 years (but never driven)....

My husband checked with the authorities a while back to make sure, and he was told that as long as I don't drive a car in Switzerland, I need to change it over within 5 years.

I also recently renewed my Aussie one, but kept the old expired one as well, because the old one is needed to 'prove' that I have held a licence since before I arrived in Switzerland... and that it's currently valid...

You were probably singled out by the police as driving around Bern with a large caravan in winter isn't normal for the locals.

We love our international stereotypes here you know.

Or maybe the Police thought your "NL" sticker was short for "No Licence"?

I have lived and worked in Germany and Switzerland.
You really don't want to know how many people have asked me if I have a caravan - the topic is even more popular than coffee shops

In reply, just ask when you'll get your bikes back.
;-)
Caravans are quite popular in Switzerland too - and it's not that there's no market for them in Germany, either.

Re: Cought by the police driving using my dutch driving license, after 12 month!

And now that you have been initiated into (read as made fun of) the English Forum. Here is an answer that might help:

I was caught in a similar situation during a routine Traffic check last year (driving on a non-swiss, non - EU license) well over the 12 month period (I think it was around 4 years). I did not convert my Drivers permit because I do not generally drive here and plus I was very lazy about it. They gave me a fine of 250 CHF and gave me a letter to present myself at the Canton DMV in the next 14 days to switch my license over.

Once I went there, had to fill out the form, give them my pictures and get an eye test done. Since I had a non-EU license I had a choice.

Choice (a) Take the minimum required Driving lessons and give the driving test to get my license.

Choice (b) Go straight to give a drive test which if I failed then I would need to do the whole damn course (Theory, Medical, Safety and higher number of Driving hours).

Long story short, since I have been driving for the past 15 years, I just went for option B, passed my test and got my drivers permit. The Permit itself cost around 180 CHF.

Hope it helps.

Please note that some rules may differ as per the canton.

Hi Thanks a lot for your reply,

I have submitted my papers today and they have accepted them , I will get my Swiss driving license in two weeks , it was easy procedure.

The funny thing that I have to go back to the Netherlands in June 2013, and most probably I will not come back to Switzerland, because I'm in Switzerland just for a project (and the project is almost finished)

According to Netherlands rules I can use my Swiss one till 10 years , from date of issue

Now , I will wait the bill to come.

Thanks a lot

OK, whilst scrolling down I was effectively waiting for the picture of the plane and the caravan behind it and lo and behold, there it came

Doing a yearly bet with my German hubby on from which country the majority of the foreign caravans and campers are in Scotland? Guess what, I win every year as there are always more Germans :-) Actually, a lot of Swiss and Italians as well

Re: Cought by the police driving using my dutch driving license, after 12 month!

Hello,

I am a student here (B-permit) in Switzerland and I've been using a UK licence as that's where I live, since summer last here. I intend to leave the country in Dec this year... 18 months in all.

Should I convert my licence over? I can't say I've been particularly keen to given that I'm not here for good (I don't intend on staying) but if I need to then I'll need to make the arrangements! And get this sorted!

Conversely, I go back every 3 months or so. Will I be able to drive in the UK if I switch my licence? :s

Glad the op got sorted out with so far no pain!

With a population of 82 million for Germany and 17 million for the Netherlands, there is no surprise there are more caravans from Germany. Now, if you could figure it out as a %age of population, that would be good.
