According to the project website, it is due to open in 2014
http://tram8.info/index.php?id=terminplan

The new trams deliveries for this and for the replacement of all older Basel types start in a few months

Hope that helps

Pat

Re: New tram line from Basel to Marktkauf (number 8 tram)

Does one need to pay extra to cross into Germany (like the buses nowadays) or is it covered by the initial fare?

Marktkauf is very very near to Border of Germany and Swistzerland. If we need pay extra,we can go to Marktkauf from the border on foot. Just as physical exercises.

From the website (with machine translation too):

Quote:
Ab Basel muss für Fahrten nach Weil am Rhein ein 2-Zonen-Ticket gelöst werden.
"From Basel for trips to Weil am Rhein, a 2-zone ticket to be resolved. "

Enjoyed that tram trivia, thanks. It does seem like a mammoth project just to help people shop at Marktkauf or pick up their packages from LAS Burg. Where were the howls of protest from Basel shopkeepers?

Hi Pat, that helps although I'm disappointed it will take so long. End of 2014 by the looks of it.

I thought it was due some point this year.

Oh well, never mind.

On the contrary, Weil didn't want to pony up as much of the money as they initially agreed and Basel had to fund the difference. Most of the nimbyism and opposition against the project also came from the Weil side (or vile side, as my nieces call it when they visit), with Basel doing everything to push it ahead. I don't know where they see the business case or in what way they will benefit.

Maybe they're hoping the tram will increase land value, driving the low-cost shops out of business?

Drowned out by the cheers of the Basel shoppers.

Re: New tram line from Basel to Marktkauf (number 8 tram)

Good news for us U-Abo customers, looks like we can use the no. 8 both there and back without having to buy cross-border tickets. Should make my trips to Marktkauf a little less arduous when carrying a backpack and a shopping bag in each hand...

All starts in mid-December 2014, with tests runs from Sept. 29th onwards.

"U-subscription *: 73 CHF for individuals who
have their tax residence in the TNW area, 98 CHF for all other
* The U-pass is valid in cross-border traffic exclusively on the tram line 8"

Now, why can't they do that for France and the 38 bus to Whylen (Gleusen stop for Hiebers) ?

Last edited by Simondp; 03.08.2014 at 14:06. Reason: because I can
