Being Stupid

I was being stupid the other day and got on a bus without buying a ticket and of course i got caught. I always buy tickets and of course instead of buying a ticket and waiting for the next bus i jumped on the one that was about to leave without buying a ticket. I dont have the paperwork the ticket checker gave me. What happens if i dont pay the fine?

Re: Being Stupid

They'll double it and start adding costs. (Only guessing, I have no idea)

You know who the bus company is, go in and see them, they must have an office somewhere. Or send an email. Be proactive.

For sure they'll have their side of the paperwork.

Re: Being Stupid

You do not want to leave it. As mentioned, the cost will go up as well as the admin load of not dealing with this now.

Go down to the TL office in the FLON and tell them you lost the paper but be ready to give the date, time and bus line you were on. Pay it now.

Re: Being Stupid

On the paperwork you lost, is all the information you need :P

Normally you have to pay in 10 or 30 days.
If you wait you most probably will have to pay a surcharge.

The cheapest way would be to do as „Verbier“ and „17clarence“ said.
Get it done yourself.

Re: Being Stupid

Oh know that situation all too well - you arrive on a train and have one minute to catch the S-Bahn that will take you home, no time to buy a ticket. My son and I did that some time ago, he has a zuger pass but I don't, since I hardly ever use public transport, and if I do I always buy a ticket.
So we jumped on the S-Bahn and after the third but last stop he suddenly spotted a ticket inspector. We got up and walked in the opposite direction and got off at the next stop without being caught. Needless to say it was pouring rain that day....

But I'm somewhat surprised that you get the bill later, I always thought you had to pay right on the spot.

Re: Being Stupid

I have always wondered what would happen if you simply told them to fornicate off, they have no police powers and cant force you to show ID, so you get off at the next station.

Re: Being Stupid

Don't just be stupid. Go for "totally reckless" and ignore the follow up letter too. And then really let your hair down as you step up to the guillotine to complete your sentence ....

Re: Being Stupid

My "understanding" is that they give you a receipt on the spot (as this is now valid for travel for 1? hour), and you will receive a letter in the mail with the appropriate orange slip included, from which you may pay the bill. Once you have received this letter (it's dated) you have a set amount of time to pay, or they will send you a reminder, and slap a 50% surcharge onto the fine. Stay on top of it, and pay the fine as soon as the letter arrives. Keep the receipt somewhere safe, just in case someone is bad at record keeping.

Last, get the SBB app for your mobile device, and input payment details. You can buy a ticket from the app, and this has saved me soo much headache.

Re: Being Stupid

When I forgot to stamp my multi-ticket, as soon as I saw the inspectors I realised what I'd done and approached them. At that time it was 80CHF if you pay immediately, 100CHF otherwise. I offered to pay immediately, but they just gave me a paying slip for 80CHF.

A few weeks later I realised i hadn't renewed my kids junior card for six months... that's another story.

As far as I know either you pay cash on the spot, or you give your details and you then receive a payslip at home. You should receive yours soon.

Be carful now, as they now have your name in their database and your next offense will be fined double. This is a Lausanne speciality. If you pay cash they don't take your name, and you don't enter the database. You can request the controllers to follow you to the closest cashpoint if need be.

Can they force you to show an id?
What if you act stupid and give them partially incorrect data like wrong address or misspell your name?
Most of them misspell my name anyway even when I write it down. Really.

If you refuse to show an ID they simply call the cops. They can be quite aggressive, intimidating even.
