German speeding fine - How/Where to Pay?

Hi guys,

It's my first post here but I've been reading you for quite some time so first of all thanks for all the useful tips!

Quick question. While I was away I received a speeding fine from the Baden-Wurttemberg Police (20eur). It's got the usual photo, a form to fill in on the back and a german payment slip.

Being away a certain time I also received a "reminder" which I guess says I should confirm (my german is pretty poor) the driver's details but that also mentions that if I pay the 20euros within a week, process will be over.

I'd just like to quickly pay the 20euros rather than sending back the form with my details (which they obviously have and as I'm not contesting that I was the one driving..)

Can I do that by going to the regular swiss Post and pay there? In that case would I have to bring a 20euro-note or do they convert themselves?

Would it be easier as I live in Basel to drive to Germany and pay at the local german Postoffice?

Thanks again for your help!

Seems you should be able to pay at the Swiss Post Office.

Will a German Zahlschein slip go through a swiss machine ? (see post 3)

No harm in trying anyway. Worst you've lost is a bit of time.Post office will take either CHF or EUR (but may charge you a handling fee either way).

Otherwise, as you say, if you can just nip into Germany then it might be easier (probably best to use EUR then).

You could do that only for the entertainment value and post a photo of the face of the post employee here... paying bills at the post is a very Swiss thing and unheard of in Germany.

The slip it came with is a bankwire form - because in Germany money is kept and send from banks, not the post. So any bank including Swiss ones should be able to send the 20 EUR to the cops - however, Switzerland being what it is am I sure that a Swiss bank will ask an arm and a leg if you just walk in and dare to ask an employee to take care of the bill for you. The payslip should have pretty straight forward information, namely an IBAN (the bank account number) and a BIC (the bank branch ID). With that are you able to easily transfer the money yourself online from your Swiss bank account.

Just a note - I tried, but was unable to pay a German speeding fine at the Swiss Post last week.

I'm not really familiar with Sepa payments. Is there some place to make one if you do not have a swiss bank account?

My bank offers SEPA payments free of charge when made using e-banking. I use them regularly and payments are usually the same or next day.

If you dont have a swiss or european bank account I assume You have a bank account somewhere?

Yes?

Then you have every single piece of information available to make an international bank transfer.

Its not really that hard is it ?
