Old thread but it'll do.
Heading to Jestetten today. Shortly before the last Swiss petrol-station there were at least 5 police-cars placed skewed a few meters apart from each other, alternating on the left and the right, forcing people to drive a wavy line. (Good practice parcour for trucks).
There was a big free space - which I never noticed before - also covered in police cars plus one police car positioned at the exit of this space.
As neither when I zigzagged through this "police demonstration" nor when I passed it 1.5 hours later on the other lane they seemed to pull anybody out, I wondered if they're looking for somebody? With 10 or more SUVs and God knows how many police-officers?
Couldn't find any info anywhere but I guess as it's still on-going, that makes sense.
I've not seen anything like this here ever. Then again, in the old days it seems they were more efficient; When they expected someone to flee to Italy via Sihltalstrasse, they just laid down the stinger.
So, if anybody finds out what that was, I'll be interested to know. I don't normally care but this was a bit exceptional (whith the amount of officers involved. All in masks. LOL.)

Tom | | | | | 14 days if you have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive. Only people with whom the infected person has been in close contact (people living in the same household, for example) need to quarantine themselves. If you do you have to quarantine yourself, the relevant cantonal medical service will contact you to let you know what you have to do. |

In our town they sometimes do a 'trap' with one cop at the top of the hill spotting, and two down the bottom of the hill pulling selected cards over - radio communication between the two.
Generally catching people who are using their phones or not wearing seatbelts on their morning commute.

So, does anyone know what they are doing?
Saw this 3 times during the last week, once in Berne, once near Winterthur, and just today again near Frauenfeld. What seemed like 20-50 police cars, police everywhere, redirecting traffic, checking everyone, what's inside their car, etc, never saw anything like this in all my life. Apart from Hollywood movies and at the border in some third world countries.

With more people WFH, revenue from speed cameras is down so the boys in blue need to find other avenues to generate revenue to pay for all those BMW's they fly around in. The probably have a target to stop x number of cars, assign y number of fines and generate xy revenue!

I've seen it more frequently within the villages too. Sometimes they are looking to see if you're wearing a seatbelt, sometimes checking your tires, sometimes just looking to see who's inside the vehicle.
No rhyme or reason, just one of those TIS things I've come to expect.
As noted earlier, perhaps a revenue grab too as I've also seen more mobile speed cameras out lately.

Once I saw the police block the whole access to A3 (between Sihlcity and Wiedikon) to check alcohol levels just before Christmas.
I was not checked but it was a big traffic jam (30min I guess)

I was not checked but it was a big traffic jam (30min I guess) | | | | | That happens regularly.
Or rather happened, before bars, clubs, restaurants and basically all offices (and thus office parties) closed down.
I remember that we had a Christmas-dinner once and somebody drove that way (and was stopped). He informed everybody else and probably saved a lot of people from losing their license (they took taxis...).
Those mass-checks are sometimes really done for no reason at all other than to check everybody for open arrest warrants etc.
They also used to fish out the odd burglary-crew with their tools or immigration-violations. Or drug offenses, of course.
It is annoying if you are in the traffic jam, but it is IMO a good thing that they check.

Never seen so many.
I guess if they are checking a whole freeway it can make sense. They don't have much of the usual work with the pandemic.

Oh yes, they can & do.
They stop you to verify that what they got via camera tools is accurate and likely to give you a ticket .
