Edelweiss air, longhaul - what do you think?

I'm looking at options for flying to Canada later this year, and Edelweiss Air have flights at a pretty competitive price.

Has anyone flown long-haul with them before? There aren't so many reviews online, and I was wondering how they fare with regards in-flight entertainment and food. I think they run A330s on my route.

Correct A330. If you are luckly you will get HB-JHM which they have leased from swiss. Otherwise the eco in their "normal" planes is not too bad but I find the seat pitch a bit cramped I am 185cm BTW.

My sister-in-law has flown with them to Florida and had nothing but good things to say about them - she is tiny though so people of usual height may have a different experience.

Re: Edelweiss air, longhaul - what do you think?

Our flights with Edelweiss to Cuba were both good relative to other carriers. Standard video entertainment, standard seat space size etc. Somehow we ended up in business on the way back (we don't know why but they were our seat numbers!) and I could also recommend that too (the steak was pretty good!).

Think it was Edelweiss that we flew to Mexico a few years ago. Flew Comfort Class, well worth the extra costs for the 11 hour flight.
Can recommend it. Have a good trip.

Used them to Cape Town about 4 times last year, both eco and "business" which is more eco+ really.

No complaints. Food is digestible, crew were friendly. IFE sucks but I use the iPad anyway nowadays.

Hi, lucky ouy. Edelweiss is really not the worst choice for flights. I like it. It is uncomlicated and friendly. Thank you for the tip. I wanted to visit my auntie in Toronto this summer and this is a very good price, I think.

Re: Edelweiss air, longhaul - what do you think?

Edelweiss is fine, no issues there. as previously mentioned, they are occasionally indistinguishable from SWISS.

Condor flies to multiple Canadian ports from Frankfurt or Munich at exceptionally low fares -- but you need to get to the departure airport, and sometimes change in Canada as well.

I don't know where you're going, or when, but for example, by "exceptionally low fares" I mean Frankfurt-Calgary return (non-stop) in October for €660, taxes included ... Boeing 767-300ER, I believe.

I rarely make a note of the plane type, but we've flown with them a few times, including twice to the Maldives. Quality-wise, I'd rate them above any of the budget scheduled operators I've used, and pretty much on a par with Swiss.

Most important thing for me is seat comfort, particularly leg room, so the first long one we did with them we upgraded to their 'business' class, as I was still recovering from a serious accident. Last time we were in the normal cabin, but booked an emergency-exit row seat, which gave ample legroom, but I noticed that the normal ones would probably have been OK too.

Catering was pretty good, alcohol included. In fact the whole experience was above average.

Re: Edelweiss air, longhaul - what do you think?

This is great, thanks for all the helpful replies - it seems that it'll be worth the slight premium over a couple of other options. I just wanted to check that it wouldn't be anything like my extended incarceration at the hands of US Airways

The other option I'm looking at is Virgin Atlantic over Heathrow - I'd happily fly with them again, but the direct flight is cheaper and more convenient.

Despite being pretty tall, I think I'll risk twelve hours of economy and save the cash for the three weeks at the destination. As long as I get an aisle seat and can walk about occasionally hopefully I'll have some sensation below the waist when I arrive!

Re: Edelweiss air, longhaul - what do you think?

Most of my friends fly with them to the beach destinations in Florida/Miami/Tampa, etc, and they are always very satisfied with the level of service and the food onboard.

Is edelweiss the cheaper brand within the SWISS/Lufthansa family by the way? much like German Wings and Lufthansa?

Hi,
I flew Edelweiss business class to Male in the Maldives and the experience was very surprisingly good! A friend of mine frequently does that trip in economy and has never had cause to complain. One tip though, do NOT fly Air Canada. It's worst airline imaginable.

The business class seats are the 80's style business class seats though, they recline but that's it. Dont expect a lie flat seat, unless you are lucky and have the A330-300 that's on lease from swiss.

Re: Edelweiss air, longhaul - what do you think?

Thanks for this info - I am really excited as I just booked our trip to Florida for the fall. Zurich - Tampa for 620 CHF! When buying 5 tickets, saving on the flight is a nice bonus!

Check out their website - I only looked as I got an e-mail today from Swiss with some flight specials, and I am glad I did! (btw, we are flying Tues - Tues).

In the past we have gone Frankfurt - Orlando (but not direct) for around 600€ - so I think this is a great deal and hope we like the route. Our destination is close to Daytona so we have a farther drive once we get there, but we don't have to get to FRA (although that wasn't as painful as OH family lives near by, but it is still a long drive to get there and not one that is fun to do after a long flight back to Europe)

this might be changing, from their website:

Quote:
The new Business Class - a place of dreams starting from June 2014

The new Edelweiss Business Class. With fully lie-flat seats that convert easily into two-metre long beds, the new Business Class is all about maximum comfort and service excellence on our long-haul flights. The new in-flight entertainment system, featuring large sixteen-inch HD touchscreens, promises great movie moments above the clouds.

Cape Town in March, noticed no deterioration in standard.

I think you can look up the seats on Seatguru if you use the Swiss codeshare (I normally book via Swiss) or look up the aircraft model on one of the flight tracking sites.
