Importing my car & Swiss Insurance

Hi there,

I am trying to import our car. It is currently insured with Italsure, which is expat insurance. Having gone to the customs office today, they told me I need Swiss insurance. I thought that, as it is not actually UK insurance, and is expat insurance, then this should be fine.

Am I wrong? Or are they telling me fibs at the office. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Importing my car & Swiss Insurance

Once imported the car will be on Swiss plates - at this point you will need to get Swiss car insurance.

If your car remains on its original plates it can stay on your original insurance - as long as the insurance is valid.

Re: Importing my car & Swiss Insurance

Thanks for you quick response....

The insurance documents state that it complies with Swiss Insurance regulations. What is the point of Expat Insurance is it is not actually valid?

I use it in Italy, on my Italian car, with Italian plates. This makes no sense to me.

Re: Importing my car & Swiss Insurance

As far as I know you are only allowed to drive your car with foreignplates for one year after that you NEED to register it in Switzerland and get the Swiss plates. It happend to a friend of mine. The police stopped him driving his car registered in Germany and told him the above.

Re: Importing my car & Swiss Insurance

Yes that is true. That is why I am importing the car.

The problem I have is they are saying my Italsure insurance isn't valid and I need Swiss insurance. I have found the answer in another thread, though.

Italsure has two parts to it, one part is underwritten in the UK, the other part is underwritten in Switzerland. We just have to show them the Swiss part of the policy and then the car can be tested.

I was pretty sure this was the case.

Thanks anyway guys.
