Speeding fine in Schaffhausen.

Location: Schaffhausen, A4 Rheinbrücke km 17.46

So I remember this trip I looked at a speed limit sign thought it said 80 slowed to around this +5 and noted a camera flask, thought small fine on the outside.

However when the notification arrived it says the limit was 60 so I am 19 over can anybody from the area confirm the speed limit at this location? I could drive back but it is a bit of a haul.

The confusion thing is that the fine is indicated a an out of town on the highway fine, so why then would there be a 60kph speed limit, I thought the minimum out of town was 80?

I am reluctant to call incase they have made a mistake and it should have been an in town fine with more repercussions.

Any suggestions/help would be great.

Have a look at google map: https://maps.google.ch/maps?hl=de
You might see the speed limit sign.

Re: Speeding fine in Schaffhausen.

The minimum out of town is not 80. I've seen 70 and 60 many times. (of course, it's a maximum!)

Re: Speeding fine in Schaffhausen.

There is indeed a very short 60 zone on the bridge due to merging traffic.

You must have been driving north on the A4 (towards Schaffhausen) - the 60 zone is halfway over the bridge after coming out of the 80 limit tunnel. When travelling south, it's all 80 at that point.

The A4 is classified as a Autostrasse at this location (not Autobahn). Minor speeding infractions on Autostrasse and Out-of-town roads have the same price. (See item 303.2)

The maximum allowed speed on an Autostrasse is 100km/h if not signed otherwise. (Art. 4a VRV)

As other mentioned, there is no lower limit for out-of-town. For example here is a 40 limit (including a nice streetview oddity ;-) ).

Also you may encounter a 60 limit on the autobahn, like at the construction sites around Bern.

Yes I once nearly got caught here, saw the sign at the last minute.

Re: Speeding fine in Schaffhausen.

Mine came today too.

Flashed at 78km/h minus 5km/h tolerance left me 13km/h over.
Fine is CHF 160.-
Bummer.

The 60 zone can't be particulary well marked. I normally notice the everchanging speed limit well.

Is anyone familiar with this stretch of road. Is it well signposted?

Thanks,

Eli

This piece of road is well signposted it has a 60 clearly marked plus a radar sign and has been like this for years. My OH was also done there years ago

Re: Speeding fine in Schaffhausen.

Maybe it's just my aging eyes but I wish they'd put a "xx kmh in 500m" warning signs up or something similar, or have this info in a sat nav. I don't feel safe braking hard to reduce speed on the motorways with loads of traffic behind me, who may or may not all be Swiss drivers doing the same.

80km/hr to 60km/hr doesnt really require hard braking even with loads of traffic behind you

Travelling north it is an illuminated 60 sign in the Tunnel. Just above the sign a "Achtung Radar" note. https://goo.gl/maps/91LZF6snqmp
Outside the tunnel another "Achtung Radar" note. https://goo.gl/maps/swJM9hefp1y
Then approximately 50 meters before the actual speed "trap" an other 60 sign. https://goo.gl/maps/QQ6yRtYSTz42

How much more warning and speed signs do you need? Stay off the roads.

If you were to use an App like CanSam it shows you the limit as it warns you of the camera. I know the police wouldn't take kindly to it, but it does ensure that you are aware of the speed limit, at least in those places where cameras are sited. Of course I wouldn't dream of using such an illegal device myself, hoccifer.

I've never driven that stretch of road. I meant in general. In Switzerland the 120 to 100s are fine. You've got cruise set on 121 because you're maverick that way and you see a speed sign and set it down to 101 in advance. Then you realise it's an 80 and 50m (or maybe more) after that there's a 60, and you've got a bunch of Germans behind you. Clearly foreigners don't know the rules and should be prevented from driving here.

That one nails many the first time, including myself. Apparently it's a 60 zone due to an icing risk on the bridge. I call bullshit though and reckon it's merely there to catch German tourists on their way back north.

According to this https://walterlenz.wordpress.com/201...schaffhausens/ it is because there is a merging lane where a lot of accidents happened in the past.

The merging lane has a very short slip way (~ 90m) after a narrow bend. https://goo.gl/maps/7MFGEo2jT4x
A semi may barely reach 60km/h at the end of it.

This one is not even that heavy:
