Import car from Geneva to France - anyone done it?

I have seen a car i like in Geneva where i work- however i live in France. I have been told it will be a nightmare to import it. Has anyone done it/ can confirm it is indeed not worth it??

Thanks

Re: Import car from Geneva to France - anyone done it?

Hi,

Sorry to dig up this old thread.

Did you do this? Any pitfalls?

I am now working in Zurich so was wondering about buying a used car here and immediately registering it in France (where I live).

I know the process in France as have re-registered my UK car there, but I read something about having to have owned the car for at least 6 months if it is being imported from non-EU country.

Any clues, much appreciated.

thx

Hello,

Wondering if anyone has imported their car from Geneva to France recently?

Can anyone tell me if there is tax to pay if I have owned the car for more than 6 months?

Thx, Katherine

Thats a different topic - is mentioned in another thread by confloozed.. MFK is better than CT and might come up better with old swiss cars than old french cars... for new definitely not swiss..

Other reason is if u r getting a car in swiss for free or extremely cheap..

LOL.
Somebody who would buy it, will also need to deal with import.
C'mon lets figure out how to do it what I originally asked.. and the cost involved.

Hello,

I wonder if you still need an answer to your question… But if you don't maybe somebody else will need this answer.

Yes, I have done it, because I moved from Geneva to France and wanted to keep my car.
It's sometimes interesting, because there are a lot of resales of used cars in France, which pushes prices up.

You'll have to go to the customs (choose a big one), and explain your project. They'll give you some paperwork… And maybe you'll have to request papers to the manufacturer too, to attest the compliance of the car to european standards.
And…you'll have to pay taxes. I don't remember how much, just ask to the customs.

Good luck!

When I exported my motorcycle for sale part of the tax was based on the value of the motorbike. This value was taken from their car industry book value so if your car is worth less i.e. more km's than normal it may be worth getting a valuation from a garage as the customs won't believe your valuation.

Is there a certain percentage they charge? And do you have to pay it on the spot or do they send you a bill to your address?

My situation was slightly different in that I was selling the car to a French resident and he would have had to pay import taxes at customs before moving on again. If you are going to be resident in France then this could be different (see link below).

Re: Import car from Geneva to France - anyone done it?

OK so if i read this right, as long as you have lived in Switzerland for 12 months, plus owned the car for at least 6 months, when you move your residence to France no tax is payable so long as you list the car on the customs declaration within 4 months of entry and keep the car for at least 12 months, right?

And you need to take a Certificate of Conformity (CofC) and get a Control Technique done to get it registered within 12 months of moving to France.

Can anyone who has actually done this let me know did i miss anything important?

Any further advice?
