Is this a photo radar?

I was driving on the motorway through Basel the other day a few kilometers over the speed limit.

Unfortunately for me, there was a police officer running a speed control, using a small device with two lenses that looked like this:

My question: is this a photo radar, and should I be expecting a rather expensive self-portrait through the post? Or is this a normal radar unit, where they stop offenders to issue them tickets?

(I'm suspecting the first, but hoping for the second...)

Re: Is this a photo radar?

it's a Laserpistole.

Edit: to give you a clue, the LTI 20-20 is one of these: http://www.pepipoo.com/LTi2020_screen.htm

It can record the offence.

Just how over was your over? And was it in a 120 100 80 or something else?

Be prepared to receive an invoice in the mail.

Okay. But is it a laser pistol where they have to stop you to give you a ticket, or is it a laser pistol that takes a photo which you receive later in the mail?

Eg, am I free and clear because they didn't catch me on the day, or do I have to wait it out by the mailbox to see if I was caught?

cross your fingers and toes.

did you see any feds parked up on entry lanes to pull people? I'd guess Swiss efficiency means that they're not going to actually stoop low enough to chase you....

Re: Is this a photo radar?

No, the speed trap was just a single officer standing between the two carriageways -- it was on the entry ramp to the Horburg tunnel, in a short passage of 60km/h between two 80km/h limits. I drive it every day, and traffic generally flows at around 70km/h. On the day in question, I was in the right lane and was moving at the same (70-ish km/h) speed as the rest of traffic.

I took the first exit inside the tunnel, but I didn't see any waiting police cars.

No doubt this is a cash-cow of a location to set up a speed trap -- plenty of people doing a few kilometers over the limit. To be fair, in all my time driving here, I have never seen anyone on this part of the motorway whose speed was grossly excessive; it's just that most people don't strictly respect the 60km/h limit.

I suspect that with the tolerance added in, I'll be somewhere between 4-7km/h over the limit. Given that it was a motorway, hopefully the fine will be reasonable...

I realise the first question has been answered, and yes, it records your details. They've been really nasty in Basel over the last year or so, doing this, to my knowledge, at least once on the A2 exit ramp southbound at Wettstein, where the 50 limit has been applied on the high section but in practice drivers are still slowing down for the junction at the bottom, rather than slamming their brakes on at the top of the hill, and once on the uphill 60 limit towards France after the A2 has split three ways at Wiese.

In the former I got a 1kph penalty, the latter, more recently, I was fortunately slowed by someone else and then spotted them.

These do annoy me, as in both cases they've deliberately targetted places where drivers are in the process of slowing down gradually, safely, and in fact are encouraging more dangerous and less economical driving, i.e. the use of brakes to suddenly decrease speed by 30kph while still in flowing traffic.

Edit: I see in fact that it was the latter of these two locations that got you. Annoying, isn't it?

Re: Is this a photo radar?

oh stop worrying then. While speeding is an absolutely offence, they're probably looking for people 20+ over the limit.

as it's a manned installation I think you get 7% (I think the small roundings are for fixed cameras) knocked off the actual reading. Which means it's barely worth the paperwork if it's considered an Autobahn.

Oh and it's possible that it won't read above 250kph so investigate removing your limiter and get spending money with Hirsch

The law distinguishes between moving or stationary devices at time of measurement. Hand held or fixed mounted devices have the same tolerances.

Going north or south?

There's often a temporary camera just after the 80 -> 60 kph limit before the airport turning on the way north. Also they often have a car/camera in one of the emergency areas.

The speed limit that often gets me though, is the Hagnau 100 -> 80 kph before you enter the tunnel. I've been down that road so often and yet cruising at 100 you really don't notice the need to slow down... only been caught once to date... the day I got my driver's licence back after a month's ban...

Of course, the real question is what were the German police doing there?

Heading north / towards France. I'm well aware of the spot in the tunnel where they stick the temporary camera (although this is still in the 80km/h section of the tunnel -- the speed limit drops just before the Euroairport exit, but after the layby where they normally position the camera).

This speed trap was on the flyover immediately before you enter the tunnel (where you've got the lovely view of the Thomy factory), where the limit drops from 80 to 60 after the Schwartzwaldtunnel. It then goes back up to 80 as soon as you've rounded the corner in the Horburgtunnel. Looking at a map, the 60km/h stretch looks like it's about 250m long.

I am luckier then you are .Las Friday in a 80 Km zone I was passing 6 cars , I must have done a least 100 miles/ h .when I bulled back in ,there was a cop pointing his radar gun right at me . but he was busy with someone ells and his cruiser was on the other side of the road . Consequences would be ,1 week car impoundment one year licence suspension and court imposed fine And insurance doubling minimum http://speedingontario.com/penalties.php

Yes, that's exactly where I saw them a few weeks ago. They seemed to be standing on a platform next to the road but the other side of the concrete barrier.

Add another to the list of 'places to be extra observant'.

I'd normally be doing about 90 (indicated) on that stretch.

I love the OPP. They nailed me at 127 in a 90 many years ago and kindly told me nothing would happen if I did not pay it.

Except a bonds agency trying to chase me down at a partial address.....
