Re: Day-time car headlights mandatory 1.01.2014

Before I go the Audi garage and have them sell me something I don't need, can anyone tell me if the inner headlight that turns on in the first position in my 2004 Audi qualifies as a DTRL? It's white and seems noticible in daylight as I've seen other running with them.
Cheers,
Jsherk

Hi,
There is more glooming laws coming for next year, still about the same "law" that made those day time car headlights mandatory:

Extract:
Additional measures from 2015

The remaining measures of road safety program Via sicura come into force from 2015.
-They will cover the quality assurance assessment fitness to drive,
-update the minimum medical requirements (including differentiated restriction of driving licenses for seniors)
-the requirement to take education courses Road to the offending drivers
-the use of data loggers

-the use of Alcohol ignition interlock immobilizer (you'll have tobreathe in that device and if alcohol is detected, the engine won't start)
-the introduction of the principle of evidential control by the Alcohol ignition interlock .

I'm very not keen on the use of data loggers and also of the Alcohol ignition interlock!!

I hope it won't be mandatory and will have to be fitted for all vehicles...
Also, probably it will be mandatory for all new vehicles making it even more expensive!

I'm all for safety and all that, but I hate government control and I don't drink alcohol!!

Also this is very ridiculous situation because i'm sure this is a very easily to bypass technology:
- Friend or 3rd party starting the engine for you
- Pet blowing in that breath analyzer thing
- Any technical bypass
- Fake "breathing bags" made pre-drinking
- Etc...

What's next? a personal cop mandatory in all vehicles, ready to arrest you?

Seems it is not so easy to bypass the breath analyzer thing; they measure your breath for temperature, humidity etc. Nevertheless there are companies that sell devices that claim to do the trick.
Also they ask for a refresh every 15 minutes or so - tough if you are on the autobahn with nowhere to stop....
It is not just a question of fitting them; they need expensive recalibration quite frequently.

The problem with the use of data loggers is the results usually need skilled interpretation which is not quick or cheap. Obviously if you are doing 100 in a 30 zone then high skills are not needed but if you are in a complex urban area with lots of speed changes and direction changes then it is a challenge.

About "update the minimum medical requirements (including differentiated restriction of driving licenses for seniors)". Not so easy to implement - it needs a pool of certified medical practioners and then they have the problem of how many doctors want to take unpaid time off to do a long and expensive training course.

Re: Day-time car headlights mandatory 1.01.2014

Out today in totally overcast and drizzly conditions, so dim that my automatic headlights switched on - and yet about 1 in 10 to 1 in 12 cars had no lights and some only parking lights...

People are particularly rebellious in your parts!

I have yet to see a car without its lights on in Lausanne area.

Sounds like here.

Even the police don't use them.

those are sidelights, the law allegedly requires dipped headlights (position 2).

but as pointed out, until someone says it's a problem, don't make it a problem

I actually replaced my sidelights with these LED sidelights.

Nobody could ever give me a definite answer as to whether they are legal or not (as sidelights), however I might be able to argue that they are actually my DRLs

Legal - yes (as long as they're white not coloured)
Qualify as DRLs - no

There are sellers on Ebay claiming that certain LED replacement bulbs can be used as DRLs

Re: Day-time car headlights mandatory 1.01.2014

maybe in places they can be but the new legislation says dipped headlights (not sidelights).

Sidelights with LEDs in are still sidelights (I have LEDs in my sidelights plus turn lights).

But given the rough justice not being served at the moment and the fact that they consume little power, LEDs are good.

I got mine from www.hids4u.co.uk

Re: Day-time car headlights mandatory 1.01.2014

How did people on here know about this? I read it in 20Minutes and people have mentioned it around the office at lunchtime but I have seen NOTHING official to announce this to the public (roadside posters would be a start..)
I am just wondering how this sort of thing is normally communicated in Switzerland, is everyone expected to read the local paper to find out about this stuff? I remember when they introduced the bin tax there was an equal lack of official notification.. :-(

On the way from the airport the other day, the information sign above the road read:

Save 40Fr, turn your lights on. Your police.

Cheeky bastards, they don't even make an effort by saying "drive safe, turn on the lights" or something...
