Moving from France to Switzerland (VD) - how long can I keep my French plates?

I am soon moving to the Nyon region, coming from France. My car has currently French plates (and insurance).

How long after I officially moved in (i.e. registered address, etc) on Swiss soil that I need to change my plate to a Swiss one (and insure it with a Swiss insurer)? I am looking for the longest possible legal period of keeping my cheap French insurance - one year?

Thanks.

If you do a search > google search for - keep plates - you can see all the other questions (hopefully answers too) on the same subject.

1 year. You also have 1 year to get a Swiss driver's license.

And remember to report your car to customs as part of your belongings during the moving process so you can import it tax free.

Re: Moving from France to Switzerland (VD) - how long can I keep my French plates?

Hi
I am going to be in exactly the same situation.. we move from France to Nyon area in January.....

I rang our FRENCH insurers to ask how long I stay on the French plates and was told that we had 31 days before the French insurance would expire!!!
(our renewal date is December, so it had nothing to do with that)

recommend you discuss with your French insurer too!!

Gail.

Hi,

our French insurance (Allianz) confirmed that they can not insure us anymore after we have legally moved residence to CH, even still with French plates.
You need a CH insurance that will be linked to the car chassis number.

Allianz of course exists here- so could they not arrange a swap with Allianz Switzerland at a decent rate? I would ask them if they can facilitate this.

You'll find it isn't that cheap when you break down on the side of the road and it is of no use here.

Also, I had a Swiss insured car I had to switch to French insurance, the Swiss insurance is actually 20% less then in France. Sucks.
