Moving from UK to Basel - lots of advice needed!

Hi, I'm already living in Basel but my belongings are still back in the UK as I've been subletting for the past few months.
My apartment is nearly ready here now so I'm preparing for the move. I don't have a huge amount of stuff so my plan was for a friend to drive everything over for me (for a fee of course!) in their van but first wanted to hear any feedback from anyone who has already done this before...
  • For example, how much in petrol / Eurotunnel tickets (roughly) did it cost if you came by van?
  • Is the easiest/cheapest route to go via Belguim/Luxembourg to avoid the French tolls?
  • Is it easy to find parking in Basel without a permit on a Sat/Sunday (they will only stay 1 day, we can park the van anywhere in Basel after we've unloaded)
  • Is there likely to be any issues with Swiss customs if I'm not with them as long as I fill out all the paperwork for them (I guess I can meet them at the border if needed though)? while I'm on the topic, are customs forms easy to fill out??
  • When all's said and done, is it probably easier if I just pay for a mover even though there's only enough to fit in a white van and everything is already boxed and ready to go? I think usually movers prefer you to use their boxes/packing teams?
I would guess that (for obvious reasons) a mover they would charge more than the standard costs and any fees for the actual transport and I'd rather the money go to a friend but I obviously want the cheapest option to do this!

In advance I thank you for your knowledge, insights and (what I'm sure will be) helpful advice!!

Re: Moving from UK to Basel - lots of advice needed!

I would say search the forum here.

roughly x2-3 full tanks of diesel one way for a average van + tunnel cost. this should be easy to work out

Ferry is much cheaper, Dover - Dunkirk but takes longer.

French tolls = Yes avoid otherwise + more cash plus Luxembourg is cheap fuel

Check the Swiss border is open to declare your imports on a Saturday or Sunday you may find it is closed and you will have to wait until Monday! (It has happened!)

They can be a pain opening boxes and checking lists. take the path of least resistance.

Unless you sneak in via a smaller crossing than the A35/A5 FR/DE options on a Sunday (not suggested)

Mover = no, I did this myself and chose the sneak through a quiet border option.

Study this page in detail.

Re: Moving from UK to Basel - lots of advice needed!

We drive once per year back to Ireland .... through France. (Cherbourg)

We pay about 70 euro on tolls (One way) and about 200 Euro on Diesel (we drive a Range Rover). The Journey takes us about 10 hours, including stops for food and stretching the legs.

Only once we took Belgium/Luxembourg route. It was a few years ago though and if memory serves me right you can knock a a few hours off the journey. . . though I cant remember any tolls as I was sick at the time, in and out of sleep!

Hope that helps. . . a little!

http://www.viamichelin.com/web/Routes

Use this to compare routes 33.20 Euro in tolls most direct route Basel - Calais via toll autoroutes you may gain 1hr, which probably isnt worth it in these circumstances.

Basel to Cherbourg is not comparable unless you plan on going to Plymouth on the overnight ferry?

Fastest Basel - Calais = 6hrs (very illegal)

Slowest = 9.5 (rush hour, Strasbourg night mare)

Strasbourg is common to both routes try to avoid at rush hour.
