Professional driver / taxi license and regulations + ride sharing restrictions

Hello,

Happy New Year!

I am looking to find out requirements (federal + cantonal regulations, licenses etc) in Zurich of becoming a (i) private limousine driver, and (ii) taxi driver?

A related question would be (iii) if a taxi driver could also operate as a private limousine driver off duty?

Also curious to understand (iv) what restrictions there are (if any) for drivers with a personal/individual (i.e. not commercial license) to charge passengers for 'ride-sharing'.

Am only beginning my research now and happy to share what I find out but any information that may help on i,ii,iii,iv would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
AdN

There are enormous restrictions here for taxi driving.

Too many drivers, too many taxis, long hours, very low pay.

In short, only good if you have another income: many drivers receive invalid payments from another country.

Thanks for replying. Beggars belief how pay is poor despite Zurich having one of the (if not the) most expensive cab fares in the world - why do you think this is so?

If any members know specific answers to i,ii,iii,iv or can point where to look - much appreciated!

You can apply for a job with a taxi company and find out for yourself the hidden costs: CHF 600 for a "Trading license" - paid by the driver.

Driver fined Fr 400 by the city for eating a sandwich lunch in the taxi. Fined Fr 4'000 for a second offense!

Drivers must lock the taxi and go away for the compulsory breaks. Sitting in a queue at the station does not count as a break.

According to a friend of mine who drives for a living, most taxi drivers are on social benefits. The companies get paid by the cantonal government to take these people on. He set up a taxi company in Argau, but it failed, even though they managed to get a hospital contract - it's just not a viable business.

Re: Professional driver / taxi license and regulations + ride sharing restrictions

Just to add to the downside of taxi driving, our community runs a volunteer taxi service whereby the volunteers are paid for the petrol they use.

The service is used by the elderly and infirm, but cuts the bottom out of the local commercial taxi market...
