It is good to read a "wake-up" and reminder call, to not take motor traffic for granted. I was relieved to find that my kindergarten age grand-daughter was taught that at a pedestrian crossing they are to wait to see IF the traffic stops, and to not cross in the blind hope that cars will automatically stop.

That must be one of the worst nightmares of any parent - to receive a call that your child is in hospital from a motor accident .... I hope too that your daughter heals well.
How many times have you also seen bicycle idiots going through red lights? I nearly got hot by one in Luzern - green crossing for me, and this idiot on a cycle goes sailing through without a care in the world. So it is not just cars one has to worry about.

Just adding my sympathies to all the others here. What a nightmare, Paul. She's young so should mend quickly, may she get well soon.

Re: Almost lost my daughter last night.

First off I'd like to thank everyone for their kind words and to say my daughter is doing much better today despite the pain.
Second.. it's been brought to my attention of a website which has pictures of the accident scene. To tell you the truth I hadn't seen any pictures of the accident scene until these and they really took me by surprise. I'd hate to think of what might have happened if the vehicle was something larger like an SUV. There would have been no bouncing off the windshield, now I truely understand when the police said she's lucky to be alive.

I'm not going to post the pictures here but will give you all a link to have a look at them yourselves.

The online article on the accident is here (sorry, only German): ---> polizeinews.ch

and the pictures which are linked on that page are these:

Re: Almost lost my daughter last night.

Ouuch! That must have been frightening for her judging by those photos Good job that she went over the bonnet rather then under.
What are the doctors saying about her injuries? Long term everything will be ok?

Re: Almost lost my daughter last night.

I am a new mother of a baby girl, and your story sent shivers down my spine. No parent deserves that late night call!!
I wish you and your family the best of luck with your daughters recovery, it is probably going to take all of you.

p.s In South Africa, if you knock a pedestrian (Your fault or theirs) you are guilty of culpable homicide out right. Which is why I drive like every one is going to jump out in front of me!!

My worst nightmare, as pedestrian or driver. I wish your daughter the best recovery and the least discomfort.

...dunno about the driver or the driving, but perhaps it was lucky it was a BMW, sloped hood with no portrusions, designed to absorb impact and minimize injury in such situations.
We can grumble about EU over-regulation, but in the case of regulating for minimising damage to pedestrians in car design, it's a good thing.

For those of you (like myself) who come from countries where public transportation is almost non-existent and pedestrians are also a rarity you have to be ready for the unexpected especially when driving near tram and bus stops.
An excellent point. Having grown up in a country where school buses were pretty much the norm, it was firmly drummed into us as kids that we should not jump off a bus and immediately cross the road, as a bus blocks the view for both pedestrians and drivers. It's much safer to either wait until the bus has gone, or to walk some distance from it before attempting to cross.

Although obviously aimed at young kids and not about a bus, this is typical of the road safety films that were common when I was still growing up:

Re: Almost lost my daughter last night.

Sheer madness in Zürich. After I had moved 2 months ago from Johannesburg in South Africa where people most of the time (with few exceptions) do not even bother to yield pedestrians to cross the road while darting almost 100kmph in the city but everyone has armed oneself with survival instinct...

I think here in the tumult of public comotion it is easier not to see incoming cars, yet for us used to driving on the wrong side of the road is another issue. I would like to address drivers on the road to be more watchful in the city because more onus is on them to avoid accident...

Speedy recovery to your daughter and sorry to hear that

P.S. I lived for one month in Zürich but moved to the outskirts of Baden where drivers seem to be more watchful on the road and respect pedestrians. But yesterday when I was in Zürich I realized that not everyone is patient enough on the road especially on Sat. nights when people like going clubing ....

Re: Almost lost my daughter last night.

I was in Dietlikon on Saturday and saw a small boy almost get run over, he ran straight across the road without looking and luckily the driver was:
1. Not driving too fast
2. Paying attention rather than nosing around for a parking space

The boys father shouted out, loud clunking of ABS (thank god) then silence, thankfully no thud. It stopped everybody in their tracks.

Obviously your daughter had a worse experience, I hope she makes a full physical recovery but that the memory sticks with her (I hope you understand what I mean, it isn't meant to sound harsh)

It is all our responsibility to avoid accidents. There is a limit to what can be expected of a driver, it is really common for pedestrians to walk out in the road without looking at a crossing. Even if somebody is doing 30km/h and fully alert if they are close enough to the crossing they will hit the person.
  • Pedestrians need to assume that cars won't stop.
  • Drivers need to assume pedestrians will randomly wander into the road at any given time.

I admit to being a bad driver once or twice. I always forget that I HAVE to stop at those yellow crosswalks. I'm too used to stop lights for pedestrians. Hopefully I will be more aware now.
