Almost lost my daughter last night.

People..

While driving in populated areas please keep your eyes open for pedestrians who suffer from tunnel vision while running for a bus or tram! Even if you have the right-of-way you have to watch out for those that might take the leap of death so as not to miss a connection. I spent most of last night at the University hospital in Zurich because my daughter Alison (18) ran from a tram to a waiting bus without looking enough before crossing a busy intersection.
If you know the area it happened across the Autobahn from Glatt Zentrum on Überlandstrasse (a busy street with 2 lanes each way). She just stepped off of Tram 9 at Altried and saw the bus she wanted to catch waiting on the other side of the street. Traffic had come to a stand still in the first lane so she saw her chance to dart across to the middle island. What she didn't see was the guy flying past all the stalled traffic in the second lane, witnesses believe he was going way over the posted limit of 60kph. Irrelevant of who was at fault my daughter soon found herself flying across the hood (bonnet for you Brits) of a BMW, bouncing off and smashing the windshield (windscreen) finally coming to rest on the ground after which she said seemed like an eternity in flight. Amazingly enough she only suffered 2 broken collar bones and a broken shoulder blade. Police and doctors said she's lucky to be alive..!
For those of you (like myself) who come from countries where public transportation is almost non-existent and pedestrians are also a rarity you have to be ready for the unexpected especially when driving near tram and bus stops. For those of you on foot, even if you have the right-of-way when crossing the street do you really want to be dead right..? And for those of you who have children go out and give them a big hug this very moment.. Be happy that they are safe and sound in your arms because at some point in time they wont be under your watchful eye and yes, even you might get that late night call that your child is in the hospital..

(sorry if this comes out sounding like I'm rambling on since I've only had a couple of hours sleep after last night's ordeal)

I wish a very speedy recovery of your daughter. For us it is still a problem of looking at the wrong side of the street.

Your not rambling! Your just one hell of a relieved father! Sounds like she had a guardian angel, I'm sure your counting your blessings today. I hope she makes a good recovery and that you and your family get over the shock soon.

Warmest wishes to you all, Lynn.

It doesn't sound like you are rambling at all. It was very well written considering the emotional events. Please give yourself a big hug from us. I'm sure you need one too!

Re: Almost lost my daughter last night.

An amazingly lucky escape - and we all wish her a speedy revcovery.

(I doubt the BWM diver was going "way over" 60kph. I would say that from your daughter's injuries he must have been way under 60kph actually.)

Re: Almost lost my daughter last night.

I always look for oncoming traffic in the wrong direction and tend to follow someone who looks like they are in the know. It is also difficult for the kids, who you have taught to diligently look right and left and right again, to start looking left and right then left again... It's those momentary lapses of concentration that you revert to the "old way" that accidents are waiting to happen.
I am so sorry for your daughter. I wish her a speedy recovery. I hope a stiff drink and a good nights sleep get you back on track too!

Re: Almost lost my daughter last night.

My worst nightmare, as pedestrian or driver. I wish your daughter the best recovery and the least discomfort.

...dunno about the driver or the driving, but perhaps it was lucky it was a BMW, sloped hood with no portrusions, designed to absorb impact and minimize injury in such situations.

Re: Almost lost my daughter last night.

vwild1 I am VERY happy for you mate! I assume the shoulder will fully recover as she is relatively young? Things could have turned out completely different if she had been unlucky.

I always see people getting off the bus and then crossing the road without worrying about oncoming traffic. The bus is completely blocking their vision but they still cross I feel like going up to them but don't for the fear of being called a loony. My wife used to do the same when I first met her! Now she is careful like me.

I am strong believer that shock and awe tactics work. Every person should be shown photos of what happens when you get run over by a vehicle. I am talking graphic images. The other thing that pisses me off is people driving really fast in built up residential areas where there are plenty of kids!

Also do not cross at zebra crossing hoping that the person in the car will automatically stop. Wait till the car stops and then proceed. You have to make allowance for other peoples stupidity. Be always defensive when it comes to traffic.

P.S-

Please Oldhand!!!! How come the guardian angel did not protect her from getting hit in the first place????? Was the guardian angel on a tea break? Where is the guardian angels for the thousands who die every day globally?

Re: Almost lost my daughter last night.

It is good to read a "wake-up" and reminder call, to not take motor traffic for granted. I was relieved to find that my kindergarten age grand-daughter was taught that at a pedestrian crossing they are to wait to see IF the traffic stops, and to not cross in the blind hope that cars will automatically stop.

That must be one of the worst nightmares of any parent - to receive a call that your child is in hospital from a motor accident .... I hope too that your daughter heals well.

Re: Almost lost my daughter last night.

Vwild, I am so relieved that your daughter has escaped with minor injuries.
I had that call once, not from an accident, but because some yob attacked my son getting out of his car So I know that feeling that the most precious thing in your life is in hospital.
I am sure that all of us who read your post are thinking of you, when you have a moment let us know how she is doing.

Paul, that sounds truly horrible. Glad to hear your daughter didn't suffer any worse injuries than broken bones.

Hope that the recovery is quick and that you and yours are back to their best soon...

Re: Almost lost my daughter last night.

Having suffered a single broken collar bone, I'm think that breaking both must be four times as bad, and a broken shoulder blade on top of that sounds like hell. But all those bones should heal up as good as, if not better than new. I hope they are dosing her up on good pain killers, and feel for her sleepless nights. It feels soooooo good that first time you can roll on your side at night, even if you can only manage it for five minutes to begin with.

Re: Almost lost my daughter last night.

Wishing a speedy recovery to your daughter. It must have been a terrifying ordeal for all of you. May god help you through this trying time

I have the same problem while driving but as I come from a country where there are no traffic rules, I keep an eye out for every kind of pedestrian and even other vehicles crossing lanes etc.

Although I get honked at a lot of times and my driving instructor also gets impatient if I stop for people who are crossing even without a pedestrian crossing specially near the Gare, I still believe in being safe then sorry.A couple of mins. do not harm anybody either way. Call it mental tuning but I can't seem to change this habit.

Please don't bombard me with your beliefs and lectures because quite honestly I don't need them.
I have lost my cool to you once before and I will not be incited to defend myself again. Butt out and leave me and my Angels in peace.
