Drive a car without MFK

So I'm thinking of buying a project car to mend around and generally speaking toy around. Something like an old MX-5 ro other.

Anyway, I'm looking for something dirt cheap, MFK is definitely not an issue, as the car will be overhauled one way or another. And I do know what to look for etc.

My only issue is this:

I buy the car, get it insured, put on my plates and I'm off? Even without the MFK - right? And then if I have 2 cars on one plate, and I want to take the project car later for an MFK, how do I arrange with the STVA that the one car is sitting in a garage and I do not wish to put it into traffic?

Maybe it should be better to take day-plates me thinks...

Tomorrow morning I'm definitely going to the STVA ZH for all the details - and I will report back, but I'm looking at a couple of interesting auctions and was thinking that maybe someone here could have an idea and maybe bid on something today

Re: Drive a car without MFK

The STVA will invite the car for the inspection, as and when needed. If the car is found to be dangerous it will be refused plates.

Be aware that when buying a car, the Cantons often insist on a fresh MFK when issuing you with new plates, especially if the last MFK was more than 2 years ago. You should ask about this tomorrow. The day plates include road tax and insurance.

so until then can I drive it ? Not running about, just a short trip to the garage in the same way you're allowed to drive it from your garage to the MFK inspection

If you have plates you can drive, MFK's do not expire on a curtain date, you get invited to take a new one at some point in the future, that could be from 2-10 years.

OK that makes sense. In Greece, when you don't get an invite and you're supposed to take the test before the expiration date or face a fine.

I keep forgetting that here if you don't go through your plates are taken away

Thanks for that guys.
