Driving licence doctors? [medical exam requirement]

I was wondering if anyone has had a similar situation to mine. I have applied for my Swiss licence within the year deadline and they have written back to me to say that I am within the category which needs to see a doctor in order to authorise my licence. I have no health problems and didn't indicate that I did on the form. What on earth does it mean?

Re: Driving licence doctors?

I see from your profile you are British. This happened to me, too. There seems to be some disparity with the conversion from the UK licence and its vehicle codes and the Swiss one.

I am licensed to drive all sorts of stuff I'm sure I'd be crap at driving and certainly have no experience of (including a fire engine and a tractor ) but in order to get the licence I had to have a basic medical.

I think you can change it and get rid of the categories that you don't need. I kept mine for a laugh.

It is not a big deal to drive a tractor (Category G). Even a 14 year old can do that.
It is the fire engine/big motorhome category C1 or the big minibus category D1 which triggers the medical exam.

I had this last week, so I changed the form and removed C1 and D1 (pretty sure) as they were deemed to be "small lorry and small bus" which I don't really need. Now I don't need the medical and it all gets processed quicker.

Thanks to all those who replied. I think that it must be the British category thing as I do have a distant recollection of having a laugh with my school friends about all the weird vehicles we could drive when I passed my text 20 years ago. I will contact the driving licence people and see how I get rid of those categories as I'm not planning on driving a fire engine anytime soon.

I kept mine on. I've not driven a fire engine but I've driven 7.5tonne lorries (and minibuses etc a few times).

I kept mine on as I was not certain that, if I moved back to the U.K, I would need to take the relevant lorry test (as new drivers need to now) if I wanted those categories put back on.

And, at the medical, the doctor threw in a couple of other tests (at cost) for cholesterol etc so a health check up every five years isn't such a bad thing.

And driving a lorry is fun!

Re: Driving licence doctors? [medical exam requirement]

Hi All

I kept mine and just did the medical test again yesterday (200CHF), it comes round every 5 years, not a huge cost to keep the categories, but something to consider.

Does anyone know if the medical test is tax deductible? I assume not.

Thanks

John

Have to do a regular as well to keep the taxi license valid. Had it done today (we pay Fr. 160.00).
My doctor says I should try taking it off the taxes (after all, mine is not for private use) but my "Treuhänderin" claims, it is not deductable.
I'll see if I can convince her this time to at least try it.
