Re: Travel Passes for Visitors

Unfortunately ChrisW has stopped updating this thread.

In my opinion the most valuable part of his original post is not the details (easy to find on the web) but the last section of his first post, comparing the options. His basic conclusion still holds: for almost all visitors a monthly half fare card is very likely to be the best option.

Note for those (like myself) who spend more than a month in Switzerland: the annual card is cheaper than two one month cards (CHF 165 vs 220). The three year card is even cheaper, CHF 400, which works out to CHF 133 per year.

My parents will visit CH for 2 months soon. What is the current best option for them? We plan on taking some long weekend trips and day trips.

Re: Travel Passes for Visitors

It really depends on what you plan to do... and how likely you are to stick to your plans.

With most of the family visitors I have found that simplifying their travel is more important than cost. Especially the older folks with just a bit of travel German and no French or Italian, yet wanting to travel independently nonetheless. So to save them the confusion of figuring out which ticket to buy I get them the Swiss Travel Pass Flex:

https://www.sbb.ch/en/leisure-holida...al-guests.html

You can opt for 3, 4, 8, or 15 days in a month. With the Flex pass they are not tied to traveling every day, and since it covers all Switzerland they can go wherever their fancy leads them. 4 or 8 days in a month is what I usually opt for, as we often will go by car on weekends, and of course one doesn't want to 'waste' one of the Travel Pass days on an inexpensive journey around my area.

With visitors who are better at planning ahead I ask them to come up with a specific itinerary; with that I can then research the various regional passes to see if there might be a better deal.

But honestly - the Flex pass usually turns out to be the most suitable option for my guests.

YMMV.
