Re: Dartford Crossing - toll payment changes from October 2014

They didn't know about it beforehand- but were given the info as they got over the bridge that they have 24hrs to pay- which they could have done on t'internet or via phone - they chose not to- as said, they are (a bit rebellious) grown-ups

That wasn't clear from either of your previous posts.
In that case it's their own fault and they can't complain when they get clobbered with extra charges

I wonder how many of the rebels here have decided not to get an motorway vignette? That could turn into an interesting discussion...

Agreed- did I say otherwise? Problem is they have no idea of how high the fines are (hence the - their fault, but I still feel sorry for them, due to level of fine)..

this smiley gave the impression that you were annoyed about them being charged and thought it was unjust and your first post didn't give the full story. (Odile's post edited after I quoted it)
That's partly why your response confused me.
I'm sure the website gives details of the fines somewhere. It seems totally daft to me to risk high fines rather than just register and pay when they had the chance.

Re: Dartford Crossing - toll payment changes from October 2014

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/d...remote-payment

... if a crossing charge is unpaid by midnight the day after a crossing, they will issue a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) for £70.

The penalty charge is £70 and must be paid within 28 days. Itís reduced to £35 if you pay within 14 days and increased to £105 if you donít pay. You also have to pay the crossing charge. The Penalty Charge Notice will tell you how to pay.

Find out more about penalties and charges.

Friends from the Midlands came to stay here until yesterday and had no idea about the Dartford new system (they don't have TV and don't buy papers)- so they will be cobbled when they go back for both crossings!
Having used the crossing for the first time, last Tuesday, and being obliged to pay it, as I'd hired a car, I have to say that it is really easy to miss the notices about the charge - and I was looking out for them. I was approaching from the North, and didn't see any signs, until after the crossing, once I was back on the M25, where I saw just one.

Very very poor, unlike the toll sections in Ireland, where it is extremely clear you are about the enter a tolled area and how to pay the charge once you're in it.

Re: Dartford Crossing - toll payment changes from October 2014

We have not yet crossed since the new system, so can't comment. We will make sure we prepay on line though. Our friends did see the sign- and chose not to deal with it- by the time they get back the 2 weeks will be over. As BM says, their choice (as said, he is the rebellious type, married to an ex colleague of mine... and a civil servant ).

Civil servant not even obeying the rules. Great!

Really can't see what all the fuss is about. It's easy enough to do online or just drive the other way around the motorway if you want to avoid the charge. After all that's what many did when you couldn't avoid it when the booths were there.

Re: Dartford Crossing - toll payment changes from October 2014

Then just set up an account and pay the darn thing. It only costs £1.67 one way if you do it in advance so you save some too.

Or only cross between the hours of 10pm and 6am when it's free anyway.

Re: Dartford Crossing - toll payment changes from October 2014

Now you can avoid paying even quicker

Quote:
Works to improve the road layout around the Dartford Crossing have been completed today, Monday July 27.

Dart Charge launched in November 2014 aiming to speed up journeys at the Dartford Crossing and give drivers more flexibility about how and when they pay the crossing charge.

Since then, roadworks have been in place to remove the old payment booths and install a new safety system to manage over-sized vehicles and dangerous loads on approach to the Dartford Tunnels.

The work has now been substantially complete and the road layout is in its final alignment.

The temporary 30mph speed limit that has been in place has been removed, and replaced with a new 50mph limit

Thought for the day! I dare you: why not cover the number plates with brown tape, just before the crossing, and remove it just afterwards. Do they photograph the driver when the cameras cannot read the number plate?

I heard a rumour that if your number plate is illegible they use photon torpedos to evaporate you

Not a very practical thing to do. I wouldn't recommend one of these either

I'd have thought that white and blue striped basking sharks would be exempt, anyway.

Re: Dartford Crossing - toll payment changes from October 2014

Just in case any of you are planning to cross this weekend, the bridge will be closed overnight Saturday

Quote:
Motorists are advised to be aware that the southbound Dartford Crossing is due to be closed overnight on Saturday August 15 for a new gantry to be installed.

The closure of the QEII Bridge is due to be in place from 10pm on Saturday until 5.30am on Sunday although the exact timing of the closure will be subject to traffic levels.

The gantry being installed at junction 1a of the M25 will house information signs for drivers.

The southbound M25 will be closed from junction 30 to junction 1a, with a clearly signed diversion in place via the A13, Blackwall Tunnel and A2 to the M25 junction 2.

Following the planned closure, between 5.30am and 8am, only one lane will be open over the QEII bridge.

This is so that structural surveys can be safely carried out on a footbridge between junction 1a and 1b.

The M25 clockwise junction 31 entry slip road will also be closed at the same time, with a diversion in place to junction 30 instead.

Re: Dartford Crossing - toll payment changes from October 2014

A friend of mine did not know of the Dart charge, and crossed both ways without seeing any signs. A month later she received, in a letter from Sweden, the demand for payment plus penalties. It arrived too late to take advantage of the cheaper penalty.

I have advised her to pay for the 2 crossing tolls, and write to them explaining why she will not be paying any penalties.

Re: Dartford Crossing - toll payment changes from October 2014

I plan to make one Dartford crossing in October, & it is possible to pay up to 12 months ahead. I have been trying to pay since July, I always get an error, altogether about 10 times!

Today the website is working for a single payment of £2.50 and I tried to pay with my 2 Coop cards, Visa & M/Card from Credit Suisse, and my Migros M/Card from UBS (I think it is UBS)

None of them worked, because Dart Charge credit card security checks were incompatible with my Swiss credit cards.

I finally I asked my partner to use her NatWest UK Visa card and the payment was made OK, using NatWest security.

What a mess, and all this trouble for £2.50 ! I have told them it is no wonder foreigners are not paying the fee.

The joke is I have a transponder for the French autoroute toll gates, order it from Sanef, the very same company that operates the Dartford payment system, but Dartford don't use the transponder system, despite an EU ruling that toll companies should work towards compatibilty!

https://www.saneftolling.co.uk/how-does-it-work

Quote from above link:
The new payment service is called Dart Charge and is operated by Sanef Operations, a sister company of Sanef Tolling.
If you currently have a Sanef Tolling Liber-t tag for the French autoroutes it currently can not be used to pay the Dart Charge, should this change an email would be sent out to all our customers.
