EF Challenge: Pick me a car.....

  • 50'000km a year - mostly motorway I'd say
  • Fuel cost not a big issue (within reason)
  • Prefer lease thus new. If you understand this then you understand leases
  • Used could be an option though
  • Cost per month up to 1500 for the lease
  • Need some luxury and load space
  • Hybrid, diesel, petrol - all options
  • I won't be buying it at the end of the lease
  • Lease duration could be 1-2-3-4 years
  • AWD or 4WD preferred

Open my mind. Help me. I've just looked at a Skoda Superb Combi...!!

Thanks and rep will be given for good ideas in this thread

PS: 1st class GA and Shonker is also an option...!

X6 then

If it was me - and I could get a company to sort a high KM lease I'd be looking at the 530xd touring. Pretty much will do everything you could possibly want it to do.

Better economy than the E-Class - but the Merc will ride better. I am not a fan of Audis. The Jaguar XF is lovely riding car - and the engine is very nice (in diesel form).

I kept a secret to myself.....I can take an allowance and get a shonker.

Like this: http://www.autoscout24.ch/de/2546096

PS: 50'000km leases are possible. Pushes the lease monthly up about 20%.

I doubt you will get a 50k annual lease on a car with over 200k, new MFK I suspect is required, strange a dealer has not done it.....

The following car is luxurious, spacious with great load space, great on all roads, smart about town, a complete bargain and basically perfect in every way.

Re: EF Challenge: Pick me a car.....

Some kind of Audi Quattro presumably would fit the bill...A6 is nice, All-Road version nicer. However just today I drove an Audi A5 3.2 (not Quattro) and even with such a large engine, with auto gearbox it felt lardy and slow.

The BMW is RWD though so not sure how good it would be in snow in the mountains; my guess is, not so good

If you want some fun with 4WD then Subaru Impreza or Mitsubishi Evo might work. Not sure they would last 4 years of hard labour though.

Re: EF Challenge: Pick me a car.....

There is a reason why the UN use Nissan, Toyota, Mazda, Subaru etc. (as well as the Landy). They are tough and go the distance. No Audi or BMW.

I'd suggest two left field options and one more common option. All petrol I'm afraid....don't do diesel

Re: EF Challenge: Pick me a car.....

1500 per month - so about 100k with a 10% deposit?

You don't mention what size of vehicle you need - but a couple more options which might work and give you a bit of performance:

Alpina D3 (with x-Drive)
Alpina XD3

Both have the 3 litre twin turbo diesel - with 350ps and 700nm. The engine is epic - delivering both performance and economy.

Why not go with a V12?
E65 has a nicer interior than the W220, but the V12 in the Merc with some headers will sound like a Pagani (there is a guy in Japan making them).

If you have to go V8, go E39 M5 or a 55 AMG (CL preferably, the thing is a damn beaut).

But if you have to go new, I don't think there is a more all-around car than an Alpina diesel. Autocar tested the new D3 against the new M3 and the results were quite surprising. And you don't have to be in the same bracket with the scumbag steves (styling wise) running around in Yas Marine Blau M4s all around Zurich lately...

Re: EF Challenge: Pick me a car.....

Anyone clocking 50k per annum - and therefore relying quite heavily on their car for business purposes - is, in my view, a fool for not buying new.

A 100k car works out at 50rp per KM over 4 years assuming 100% depreciation. A modern service pack will deal with the first 100k (minimum) of servicing. Warranty can be extended for a year without issue covering most failures. Tyres will be your only significent cost - but sat on the motorway you'll get close to 40,000 from a set.

M-cars get pricey once stuff fails - and neither V10 nor the M5 engine likes stellar miles. Sure, go down the shonker route - and you may get lucky - but in most cases they will already have 200k on the clock - and unless you have 2 of them (for when the other breaks) I wouldn't want to be trying to put 1000km each week.

Furthermore it is also worth considering fuel economy - the difference for a 6-10-14l/100km in fuel (per year) is 6-10-14k chf per year - or from best to worse 8,000chf - 667 per month.

Re: EF Challenge: Pick me a car.....

Indeed I'm thinking along the lines of a Lexus CT200h - we nearly got one of those a few years ago.

The interesting shonker might be the replacement of the current 2nd car next year.

New to dead in 4 years......would be acceptable. It might actually really be about 40k per annum....not that it matters when you're up to such numbers
