Which Frequent Flyer program is best ?

I am sure a lot of you must travel quite a bit , for business or pleasure .... Just wondering which frequent flyer program do you consider to be the best , in terms of :

1) Amount of miles earnt
2) Value for Miles earnt ( What do you get for your miles )
3) Facilities afforded ( Lounge access etc. )
4) Higher Level membership ( Is it really worth living on planes for it ) ?
5) Any other benchmark you may have ....

I am actually considering moving away from my current program ( Miles and More ) and enlisting with another one , but am not sure which one to go for so I appreciate any input on the matter .....

Re: Which Frequent Flyer program is best ?

I've heard that LOT should be best value for miles.

For lounge access I can recommend Priority Pass.

BMI is pretty good for getting you up to elite (star gold - lounge access etc) quite quickly.

I'm on miles and more though since I do most of my travel on Swiss.

There's quite a good site on things like frequent flyer programmes, www.flyertalk.com.

Re: Which Frequent Flyer program is best ?

Flyertalk.com is a great resource and this subject is discussed often. If you fly to the US a lot, OR if you fly at least 100k miles, I would recommend United's FF program. I live in Zurich, and UA is part of Star Alliance, so I get many of the Frequent Flyer perks of Swiss or Lufthansa (part of Star Alliance) and if you are a top tier member (1K), you get 6 SWUs, which are upgrade instruments that can be used to upgrade 1 class on any flight. Very useful when flying transatlantic or to Australia/Asia. Lots of other 1K perks, but that is the best one.

Good luck!

With 250k/year you should be approaching Hon Circle status once you factor in the status bonus and booking class bonus.

M&M Hon circle is top of the pile if you are flying out of Zürich. The new 1st lounge and check-in island are pretty good and delivery to the plane in a car is a nice perk (long haul only)

Re: Which Frequent Flyer program is best ?

The "Open Skies" agreement may change things a bit with regards to who flies where, so need to wait and see.

If you are flying 250K miles/year, you will be in top tier of any program. If you are already buying 1st class tix, then upgrade intruments (SWUs) do not help you. If you are buying Business/Economy, then they are pretty good. I still like Star Alliance, as they have a great global network and good FF program. I used to fly to China from San Francisco, but don't know of Swiss/Lufthansa options to Asia.

Many people think Singapore Air (and Asian carriers in general) have the best Bus and 1st class service, so you might want to look at them. Sorry I don't have more specific info.

Re: Which Frequent Flyer program is best ?

Well spotted .... In total ( including bonuses ) , i made more than 600k in the last 2 years .... However , I am still a Senator ( 4 or 5 times over , I think ) as I prefer to travel with SQ rather than Swiss/Lufthansa due to the better seating/service : The miles from the Star alliance members don't count towards the Hon Circle category ... I am actually looking very seriously at the Krisflyer program ( SQ ) since they are part of Star Alliance ( I agree that Star Alliance on the whole is a good mob to be with ) . However , not sure if I should remain with M&M or explore one of the others .

Re: Which Frequent Flyer program is best ?

If you won't fly enough on LH for Hon Circle, then you might want to split thinks so you have top tier on two diff programs and maybe two diff alliances. If you already like SQ, then maybe join them for a year. Worst case is you end up using the miles on another Star Alliance carrier. I think that they do not give good mileage credit if you are flying economy. If you are already paying form Bus or 1st, it is supposed to be a great program.

Sounds like you are pretty experienced, so you need to "consult with one of the experts" at flyertalk!
