Opinion on the car(s)

Guys, I need your opinion/expertise on this one:

Link with a car

The interior is very clean. It has 2.2 CDi diesel engine and automatic gearbox. And it is located right under my nose

Do you know what is the most likely to fail in this car at 240kkm of milage?

I'd appreciate any help!

a) the link doesn't work
2) a diesel with 240k which is based on a common rail would be something to avoid
c) a diesel with 240k that's a EUR4 with DPF is to be avoided
5) anything French with 240k on is to be avoided

Re: Opinion on the car(s)

I see... Link updated but now I don't think it is good idea. But again...Weren't cars in that epoch really built to last?
BTW: why do you think it's French?

Re: Opinion on the car(s)

good news - it's not French.
it's also a EUR3 engine - no DPF.

my only question would be has it been run as a taxi and does it have a full service history and receipts. That way you can check what has been done on the last service and see what might be due.

In short, this is a car you would run for 1-2 years and then it'll go to eastern Europe for peanuts. Would you accept that?

You don't seem to have high opinions about Mercs from that years Is it about the engine? I will ask the dealer tomorrow if it has a service history. It does not have recent MFK which is worrying and it should be done every two years in case car that old, correct?

Re: Opinion on the car(s)

the W211 isn't a bad car.

repairs to a car this age could be upsetting.

I would not buy this car without an MFK being done in the days before.

I'm tired of constant parking brake starting and clutch straining. Come, see Lausanne and the surroundings...

I will as about MFK but if electrics could be the problem then maybe I should not buy it.

Re: Opinion on the car(s)

benzworld.

If it passes MFK and has gremlins and can still be driven, who cares for a 10k car. If the electrics have not failed by now and the footwells are dry after rain then you should be "ok".

Also I think there's an additional battery in the boot. If both are original then be prepared to replace them just in case. AGM batteries would be the best choice.

In the end, it's a car that's outlasted its expected lifespan in many ways. But it's been run regularly too and probably not short runs....so maintenance records must interest you.

I never use the handbrake and always hold the car on the clutch - not burnt one out yet (although I did have one let go on me on a Triumph, once, 25+ yrs. ago - but I could still drive it the 10 miles to my mechanics).

.... and my previous post was only answering your original question.
Motors and general running gear on a Merc. should run for ever - it'll be all the silly little electrical this and electrical that, that'll start to fail .... but most, you can live without.

Re: Opinion on the car(s)

I'm just saddled with a Ford with a French PSA 2.0 diesel with DPF that failed after 150k km. the only bright point is that this is a first failure on this car, everything else was just regular wear and tear maintenance. It is going to take Ford 4 weeks to deliver
the new DPF (fingers crossed as until today they could not give any ETA).
The pity is that my car, 7 yo basic model Galaxy, would be taken by a garage for a mere 6k. So I'm not parting with it yet as I hope it will make 100k km more and may eventually become our 2nd car.

Re: Opinion on the car(s)

I had the previous version, also the Avantgarde, but a 3.0 engine. The heavy engine meant very frequent front suspension overhaul; your lighter engine might not be so problematic. At about 130,000 miles, the vacuum pipes on the fuel lines to the cylinders began to leak, allowing air in, creating airlokks, so very difficult to start in the mornings. The pipes themselves only cost pence, but replacing them involved removing the exhaust manifold......The alternator also went, the rotor coming away and puncturing the radiator. Lots of other minor things went wrong, but they cost a lot of money to fix. The workshop earned a fortune from me. I would only buy another Mercedes if it was covered by an absolutely water-tight, long-term guarantee.

Any repairs made at an authorized Mercedes dealer will make your eyes water. But at least they give you free coffee.

Re: Opinion on the car(s)

Check the yearly road tax if this is a non-DPF diesel. In Vaud there is a reduction for a EUR4 engine.

it's a EUR3. You'd need a Delorean to get a EUR4 in 2003
