If you aren't doing anything wrong, then you have nothing to worry about. Speed cameras increase road safety, and they earn money for the local community, so it's a win-win-lose situation in which the winners are the good guys and the loser is the bad guy (and probably foreign, to boot).
Sorry, my sarcasm indicator was set to "suppressed". What I really meant to say was:

If you're not doing anything wrong, then you're leading a worthless life of tedious mediocrity. Oh, and speed cameras are just another step on the road towards social totalitarianism. They are a blight on any society which values freedom above conformity.

Ah, now that feels better.

I do not see the problem. Either you are aware (*) of your speed and the actual speed limit or you simply do not belong on the road.

[some other text deleted]

(*) I could list so many more ways then reading the speedometer.

Yes, Its *REALLY* safe driving along constantly looking at your speedo to make sure you're not going 52 kph in a 50 zone, really really safe, that's never caused an accident EVER

O.k. here I go.

Frequency and frequency change of sound of: engine, tiers, wind .
Optical observation of things passing by.
Position of your foot (car), hand (motorcycle).
Vibration.
Loudness and change of loudness of: engine, tires, wind.
g-forces: Acceleration, deceleration, centrifugal forces.
And last, but also least: Tachometer and Speedometer.

The speedometer is just a tool for calibrating your senses.

However you define "limit", it will always be 3-5km over the "limit".

I defy you to drive my merc and know what speed you're going without looking at the speedo.

Can I have a go in your Merc? It would be interesting to take up your challenge at three different speeds - very slow, normal, and dangerously fast.

Re: Android App to Alert of Speeding [Traffic Sign Recognition]

Speed limits exist the world over - they are all wrong - and we all know better - except for those that don't - and crash - or run over your child - but either way all speed limits are wrong.

Or something like that anyway.

Right, where did I leave my Daily Mail?

If you can't maintain a constant speed without constantly referring to your speedo, may I respectfully suggest you stay off the ******* road, or get a car that isn't beyond your skill level.

It is very probably not a bad idea to take care about the local traffic rules, since in 2012

in Switzerland:

there were traffic offenses

- by Swiss: 28'507 or 52.4%
- by foreigners: 25'940 or 47.6%

or heavy traffic offenses

- by Swiss: 10'247 or 45.8%
- by foreigners: 12'121 or 54.2%

... even though there are only 23.8% foreigners living in Switzerland
Now. I would like to see similar statistic for traffic accidents caused by Swiss and by foreigners. Do you have the numbers?

If the latter did not cause proportionally more accidents, it's only logical to assume there is no direct correlation between traffic offenses (mostly speeding) and road safety.

Well, much of the island has normal speed limits. There are some limit-free roads, though, and I think that during TT week all limits are removed.

However, they decided recently that speed cameras would not be allowed on the island.

Re: Android App to Alert of Speeding [Traffic Sign Recognition]

If cameras were only issuing tickets to people going 10% over the post speed limit I think it would be safe to assume that people would definitely not die by the dozens, and schoolchildren would not be eradicated en masse, but people would stop paying ridiculous tickets for doing 51 in a 50 (2% over the speed limit).

I don't think that would be unreasonable...

Just think that the actual legal speed limit is 9.091% below the posted speed limit.

Actually they do that already. Just that the "rebate" isn't in percentage but rather, 3km/h or 5km/h, depending on what's measuring the speed. And even that is unique already in the sense that nowhere else do you get any kind of "rebate".
