Petrol/diesel or hybrid engine?

I already have hybrid Lexus Rx 450 h which we will be bringing to Switzerland with us.
We now have to decide which car to get as a second vehicle.I have tried looking on the Bern website to get an idea what are the costs of the relevant engines and it seems to me the road tax goes on weight of the car plus there is a reduction for type A or B cars but I can't see where it classifies them.
Can anyone point me in the right direction or clarify for me.

Here in Belgium Diesel is king and is the cheaper fuel-how is it in Switzerland ?

Are the running costs going to differ and will we get an advantage by having a second hybrid vehicle?
We are looking at getting a new or nearly new small SUV like a mercedes GLK ,Toyota rav 4,Hyundai santa fe.I have also fallen in love with the new lexus Nx 300h which is a petrol hybrid option.
Any thoughts or opinions welcome!I am thinking we have the time to buy one here before I move over in June next year ,I am assuming cars are cheaper outside Switzerland!

Re: Petrol/diesel or hybrid engine?

Ok progress ,have found that the new Lexus is classB so I would get 20% reduction in my road tax.

Re: Petrol/diesel or hybrid engine?

Depends on your driving habits. I asked this question when we were looking to replace our car. Apparently diesel engines don't do well if you do lots of short trips where the engine doesn't totally get warm before you turn it off again. Will let the experts weigh in more on that.

But honestly, I would think long and hard about the need for a second car in Bern. Parking costs at home and in the city are pretty high. Often CHF 120/month per parking spot at home, not counting what it costs in the city IF you can find a spot and not habe to pay the garage prices.

Odds are your hubby can take the tram/train into town for work. Plus if you buy a car outside CH you will need to deal with importing it and bringing it to Swiss specs. So do think carefully!

Re: Petrol/diesel or hybrid engine?

Thanks 3 wishes!
I think the car specs here in Belgium are the same as Switzerland-one would hope!
I would buy the car here soon so that we had it for over 6 months before I import it.
I will need to check the public transport options to my Husbands site ,sadly as yet we have no idea where we will live ,but i am hoping close to the International School. We are planning to rent a house ,so I would think parking costs would be included in the rent we pay.
I agree about a petrol car better for short journeys -this is why my existing one is petrol .Just found a site with fuel prices and seems petrol is cheaper than diesel in Switzerland.

Re: Petrol/diesel or hybrid engine?

120/month is realistic as 3wishes said. This is rented in addition to the flat.

I thought tax was based on weight and power with discount for efficiency, could be wrong.

Re: Petrol/diesel or hybrid engine?

Hi, depends on your annual kilometrage and the kind of driving you do. Diesel is more expensive because there hasn't been a political push like in france.
If you do less than 15k kms per year it's probably not convenient (also consider the diesel car costs more), and if you do mostly urban driving and short trips you may incur in problems with the particulate filter, the consequential forced regeneration undoes any planned fuel saving. That said, for compact SUVs diesel is much more common, it might be harder to resell a petrol SUV, but are you sure u want 2 SUVs? Hybrid is good idea, but expensive. but it seems you don't have money problems so get whatever you want, for pleasure a hybrid is much better, diesel is for tractors.

Yep car specs are identical and importing a car ( you've owned for 6 months or more) from Belgium to Switzerland is really easy.
We brought both our (diesel) cars here with us from Belgium but as I now only do short trips and not the long journeys up the E411 I regularly did in Belgium I have recently swapped my diesel car for a petrol one. Diesel is more expensive here but Diesel engines are more economical so it doesn't save me any money having a petrol engine rather than diesel.
I have no experience at all concerning hybrids but there have been a lot of 'charging points' popping up recently so I guess it's becoming a more popular option here.
